Earlier this year Hugh Brady held an address that was open to students. During the A&Q period two students asked him questions about accessibility at UCD. One student who uses a wheelchair brought to his attention that not all the entrances and washrooms were accessible to her and other students that she knew. Then another student asked him about getting audio materials for those with visual impairments. To both of these questions he deflected the responsibility to the newly appoint vice-president of ‘students’ and encouraged them to lobby on the issues. ... read full story / add a comment

Despite the Minister for Education Noel Dempsey's repeated mantraof social inclusion and widening access to education, the government has systematically targeted the most disadvantaged sectors of Irish society and reneged n virtually all its election promises by introducing cutback after devastating cutback. Since being re-elected in 2002 there has been a constant erosion of funding for schemes aimed at assisting those from disadvantaged backgrounds. ... read full story / add a comment

When the [British] government abandoned its prosecution of the GCHQ whistleblower Katharine Gun, it suggested that Blair had something to hide. The prosecution offered no evidence against Ms Gun, despite her admitting that she leaked information about an American spying operation at the UN in the run-up to the war. She said she acted to try to prevent Britain illegally invading Iraq. Arrested nearly a year ago and charged eight months later under the Official Secrets Act, she is now a free woman. ... read full story / add a comment

When a publican wants to renew his license to sell intoxicating liquor we are all equally entitled to make an objection, in writing or in person to the District Court. If the same guy wanted to start, say, a salmon farm in a nearby estuary (polluting it), he would have to post notices in the papers to alert the public of his plans, who once again could try to stop him with objections and appeals. If his business involved selling lethal weapons for export to regimes which torture and kill their opponents, guess what, his license application would be dealt with in secret by Mary Harney's functionaries in the Department of Trade, Enterprise and Employment. No public scrutiny, not even parliamentary scrutiny. ... read full story / add a comment

Seven workers – all from the same department have been suspended for taking part in a work to rule. Four of the seven are shop stewards. Many of you believe that this resolution is crucial in the Palestinian conflict, however you have voted on it without consulting with the Friends of Palestine. It may have been that you were busy in the preparation for Geneva Accords while voting for this resolution. It may be that now you will doubt your vote. The resolution that you have supported violates the basic legitimate Palestinians rights to “terminate the occupation”, and the right of return, which is recognized under international law ... read full story / add a comment
