This article is an invitation for people that may know the answer to the following questions i have in relation to fee paying schools. I understand that the state pays the wages of teachers in fee paying schools while allowing them to also charge those parents who can afford it - fees.
My understanding is that this is situation is an historical anomaly based on most fee paying schools being protestant at the creation of the state 90 odd years ago. I was wondering in these times of cut backs , is it true that the state continues with this situation..... ... read full story / add a comment

We urgently need a holistic approach to mental health and well being in Ireland. A recent BBC TV programme called: "High Anxieties: The Mathematics of Chaos" documented how mathematics has come to better understand the instability in complex system, such as our economy and our climate. Our attempts to predict and control such unstable systems are unsuccessful, as illustrated by the ongoing finance and market crisis. We face much the same sort of unpredictable development with the climate, and for the same reason, a sudden, potentially irreversible, change cannot be ruled out. The unstable and unsustainable economy is now driving climate instability. Our first task is to stabilize our economy, change its purposes, move to sustainability and try to avert the worst effects of climate change. ... read full story / add a comment

What is 42 day detention?

42 day detention is part of the new counter terrorism bill that the British government is trying to pass. The bill successfully made it’s way through the House of Commons thanks to the last minute help of the Democratic Unionists. We do not know what the Democratic Unionists were offered in return for their votes but it has been suggested that honours and titles may have been on the shopping list. The bill aims to extend the amount of time that a terrorist suspect can be held without charge from 28 days to 42 days. The bill needs to pass through the House of Lords before it becomes law. To date it has received its first and second reading and is to go through it’s review stage this week. ... read full story / add a comment

It is everywhere. The talk of the bail out. And now the talk of the extra $140 billion they bribed the politicians to pass it. Meanwhile tens of millions of American workers are watching their savings, pensions, homes and jobs vanish before their eyes. The anger about the bail out prevented it being passed the first time. There has been a fundamental shift in consciousness in the US working class. It will not go back to having the same trust in the Republicans and the Democrats and the system. However a much greater shift could have taken place if the union leaders instead of trailing with their heads down after the Democrats and the bail out had taken an independent stand. ... read full story / add a comment

Very little by the look of it... The services in Kerry General are pathetic. The staffing levels are completely inadequate and its embarrassing to see the lack of dignity on show sometimes. Virtually all departments are completely under staffed and cant deliver the basics. It appears that budgets are more important than patients in this establishment. So much so that, staffing levels are more weighted towards the drugs invoices than the drugs themselves. ... read full story / add a comment

Like many people around the world and around the country, I am humbled and inspired by the nonviolent resistance
undertaken by in Rossport against Shell and the collaborating Irish state. Those who have gathered at Rossport
to confront the power and wealth arraigned against the environment, community and a way of life nourish many of us focused
on a varitey of fronts nonviolently struggling for peace and justice. The steadfastness, heroism, solidarity and creativity of the past weeks

Let’s plant trees in Erris. Let’s plant a f**k load of trees in Erris. Let’s plant enough trees to balance out any past and future damage done by Shell or other invaders and indeed by ourselves, for we are all part of the same fossil fuel based economy with our cars, our boats, our flights abroad, our central heating and our food from far away, and given this maybe it’s not enough to fight against the system that left us with no choice but to be part of it, perhaps it falls to us to create something different, to demonstrate our commitment to another reality and to get our own bodies involved in the building of it. ... read full story / add a comment
