The old adage ‘You can fool some people some times, but you can’t fool all the people all the time’ comes to mind when summing up Provisional Sinn Fein’s ‘grass roots’. At what point will they stop being fooled and maybe step back and question the honesty and integrity of their party leader Gerry Adams ? Having once been a supporter and admirer of Adams I now find it difficult to listen to him. He was interviewed by Ursula Halligan on TV3’s The Political Party on Sunday, March 2nd . I have not read any comments regarding this interview on any of the usual sites where this might be debated or discussed. The first part of the interview was taken up with how Sinn Fein got it so wrong in the 26 counties Elections and what direction they where now taking etc etc. Ursula then went on to ask Adams…………

Two intellectually lazy revisionist views have gained ground in the popular Irish historical mythology in relation to the Easter Rising.

1) That the Easter Rising was a a deliberate romantic blood sacrifice by rebels who knew in advance that they would fail.

2) That the Easter Rising was a terrorist act. ... read full story / add a comment

It seems to me that we have well and truly returned to the days of Michael Davitt and the Land League. Where huge numbers of people are being bled dry by a small group of Landlords. And what do these latterday Landlords do with their ill gotten gains? Like the Landlords of old, they take the money out of the country. The Landlord class in Ireland have bought overseas land and buildings to the sum of 1.2 trillion euro - that right 1200 billion euro. ... read full story / add a comment

Army Sergeant Ronn Cantu is serving his second tour in Iraq. He's also a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War. Last year, he rose to prominence as a rare outspoken troop against the war and occupation when he spoke live from his base in Iraq, to America's radical online radio network Democracy Now. Then he described how he was scared out of his mind during the interview for expressing opinions the military machine simply did not want the public to hear. This time round, in an interview for another radical media outlet, we chatted over Myspace, about how he is utilizing the internet to organise against the occupation from its front line, just as the Winter Soldier events were getting closer. ... read full story / add a comment

We've been here before.
In 1992 Bill Clinton who never served in the military or fired a shot in anger challenged President George H W Bush, who was one of the youngest US fighter pilots of World War 2 and who was shot down and rescued at a sea while others who participated in the same attack were captured and cannibalised by the Japanese.
In 1996 Bill Clinton challenged Bob Dole, a veteran of the the WW2 Italian campaign who was wounded by a German machine gun and waited for nine agonising months to be evacuated to an American hospital leaving his right arm paralyzed preventing him from shaking hands, a serious disability for a politician.

Firstly, I do not intend to exhonerate or belittle human rights abuses by the PRC in this piece. Most people will be aware that Irish troops are being sent to Africa as part of an EU 'peace-keeping' mission to Chad and Central African Republic (CAR), but many will be relatively unaware of the background to the conflict and the reasons for the mission. It does what it says on the tin.
A simplistic plot.
A damsel in distress must be rescued by a hero against impossible odds.
A black and white vision of good and evil.

BUT WHAT EVIL!

Like no other movie I have ever seen, perhaps Schindler's List, this movie demonstrates the evil of ethnic cleansing, tyranny and injustice that the West would like to pretend does not exist.

Nobody can see this movie and not be changed, outraged and forced to do something for the people of Burma and other peoples oppressed through out the world. ... read full story / add a comment

I spent about 10 years involved in voluntary community initiatives like local publishing, charity concerts, youth concerts. My motivation at that time was intensely political and leftist. I believed that the economy was a machine run by the merciless logic of profit and that any involvement in it meant unacceptable compromise. Therefore, my own political principles meant that I marginalised myself from any formal involvement with it.

On the sidelines, from my Comfortable And Quite Elevated Chair of Ideological Analysis, it was crystal clear to me that Community Development was just a con-job. It was a ploy by The Elite to sap the revolutionary vigour of the people and co-opt potential revolutionaries. ... read full story / add a comment
