Government policy seems to boil down to a mish-mash of ideas about competition, privatisation - and really a dash of laissez-faire mentality about public services. However there seems to be a bit of old-fashioned loyalty to state enterprise and social policy generally. Have the PDs already produced - through their ally Charlie McCreevy - an irreversible and seismic shift in public policy. Or is the political pendulum beginning inexorably to swing back in the opposite direction? read full story / add a comment

A group has been formed to force the Irish State and the Catholic church to accept responsibility for the enslavement of 40,000 Irish women during the last century. The women were incarcerated and forced to work as slaves in the infamous Magdalene laundaries. They were physically and psychologically abused. Many died in mysterious circumstances. Some may have been murdered. They are buried in unmarked graves. This atrocity was committed by the Catholic Church aided and abetted by the Irish state. Before reparations can be made it is necessary that these two institutions be made acknowledge the enormity of the crime committed against these women. Unless the isssue of slavery in Ireland is acknowledged by the perpetrators and reparations made to the victims Irish concern about human rights abuses elsewhere cannot be taken seriously. The group is called Justice for Magdalenes and is led by Claire McGettrick. read full story / add a comment

The proposed incinerator site at Ringaskiddy iscrossed by a right of way. Local people have been walking this to reclaim the land. Indaver, the company who want to build this monster have a highly dubious claim on the land. At the time of the oral hearing last year they were not even in possession of the deeds. Next friday members of Cork Harbour for a Safe Environment (CHASE) will travel to Dublin to the High Court to find out if their case can go ahead> This is a national issue. If we can stop this incinerator we can stop all the incinerators proposed for Ireland. Please come and support us , Thanks read full story / add a comment
