You may have heard that the Airfield Estate in Dundrum, Dublin, is in danger of more development. The prime object of the Trust was the preservation of the estate as an amenity for the people of the area and that they were horrified at the thought that Airfield might be developed for housing. read full story / add a comment

John O Neill, a Finglas community worker, is standing as a socialist candidate in the Finglas Ward, Dublin City, in the upcoming local elections. With the three local T.D.’s handing their council seats over to relatively unknown newcomers, there will be a unique opportunity for him to make a breakthrough as a candidate standing on a clear platform of class politics. read full story / add a comment

Airfield is a working farm in Dundrum. I spent the first 18 years of my life growing up beside it and I am concerned about its future and the community's right to have access to it as a rare amenity in the area.

Rumours are that property developers have other ideas though. One example of this has been Gannon Developments and John Finnegan buying some of the farm’s land already, where they built the car park for a Luas station and several high rise appartment blocks. read full story / add a comment

Much has been said about the technical shortcomings of electronic voting, but less attention has been paid to the social aspects of the issue. In this talk Andrew O Baoill will draw on theorists such as Ivan Illich and Jurgen Habermas to critique the technophilic drive towards electronic voting, and highlight some of the damage it is likely to cause to the political process.

Topic: Electronic voting - the social aspects

I believe that popular resistance to the imposition of the neo-liberal
economic agenda is vital- whether one lives in Ireland or Bolivia. However,
it is often easier to see this agenda being imposed in the developing world
than it is to recognise it as an increasingly central dimension of the
‘European Project’. read full story / add a comment
