The idea behind the European Social Consulta (ESC) is direct participation in politics in an autonomous way. It is a project that will allow us to move forward and deepen the analysis and critique of the current system and build concrete alternatives, from the widest, most democratic and horizontal social base possible. All the different organisations involved in the European Social Consulta have one aim in common: To act against the ongoing capitalist Globalisation. The First European Gathering will take place in Madrid at the 10th and 11th of May. There the outline and content of the ESC will be decided on. There is a promoter group already working in Belfast, but if anyone is interested in building up their own local group, don't hesitate! Any individuals wanting to join in the trip to Madrid, get in touch with us. read full story / add a comment

The UN has been skimming off the top of the oil-for-food programme! Apparently, it was a cash cow not only for the previous saddam hussein regime (hence, perhaps it should have been called the oil-for-palace program), but for the UN and the defenders of the previous regime as well (france, russia). The game was to just keep the oil money and kickbacks rolling as long as possible and Iraqi people be damned. read full story / add a comment

The chief mediator in Sudan's peace talks ruled out a final deal by June after the government and rebels failed to make concessions on key security issues, such as whether they should merge or retain their armies. The latest round of talks ended late on Wednesday without overcoming key obstacles to ending a 20-year conflict that has killed around 2,000,000 people in Africa's largest country. President Omar Hassan Al Bashir and rebel leader John Garang, who met earlier this month in Nairobi, had hoped to sign a final peace deal by June when the current ceasefire expires. read full story / add a comment
