It's been exasperating to watch as, in defiance of the wishes of Western electorates, the cultural make-up of our countries is radically transformed. It's time to scrap the asylum system, says Lionel Shriver.

Sometimes Trump's mercantilist thinking is so radical as to be wildly, crazily brilliant, as with the Gaza Riviera plan. But on Ukraine it's letting him ? and the West ? down, says Ian Rons.

As of this morning (Mon, 12th May) McSweeney contractors have returned to demolish what remains of the western sandbank at Murphy's Quarry where the sandmartens have been nesting. A Cork City Council enforcement order some weeks ago to protect the birds and their young was ignored until Duchas sent a representative to the site. Then it was understood that all work would stop until at least the nesting season was over. Birds were still nesting there as of late yesterday evening when they were seen returning to their nests in the sandbanks of the former Murphy's Quarry. The developers D&J Coleman Builders and their demolition subcontractors McSweeney's seem to be totally above the law which is not being enforced. read full story / add a comment

Through their brutality towards the ISM and their slander of the ISM they have done nothing but increase the exposure and appeal of the ISM all over the world, elicited massive press and public condemnation, and shown their true colors as occupiers and murderers. It has become obvious that the ISM will not be deterred by the attacks upon their offices, equipment or personnel, and ISM activists are and will continue to go to Palestine and carry out their non-violent resistance to the occupation in coordination with the Palestinian people out of a deep moral conviction that the Israeli occupation is wrong and horrific, and they are willing to put their bodies and lives on the line in the attempt to protect their fellow human beings. read full story / add a comment

A full report will follow later in the week, but briefly, yesterday's Assembly was a resounding success. Well over 200 attended from right around the country and passed Resolutions on a wide array of anti-war issues, future events, boycotts, Shannon and defence work, newsletters, activists' meetings, Palestine solidarity work, Evian, World Economic Forum and much more. In my opinion the event gave a fantastic boost to the activists and we all came out of day with a clearer idea of where the Irish Anti-War Movement needs to go next. Thanks to everyone for coming along and contributing. To those who were there in spirit but couldn't make it, resolutions will be available as soon as we have them typed up and we look forward to seeing you at the AGM. Hopefully, the September AGM will be conducted in the same spirit but with an even bigger turn out. Don't forget the read full story / add a comment
