A Chronicle reporter was present when the astronaut arrived. First seeing the image on a large computer screen, she had one word: "Wow." In the critical shot, a glowing purple rope of light corkscrews down toward the plasma trail, appears to pass behind it, then cuts sharply toward it from below. As it merges with the plasma trail, the streak itself brightens for a distance, then fades. "It certainly appears very anomalous," said Jernigan. "We sure will be very interested in taking a very hard look at this." read full story / add a comment

Government spending this January has increased by 33% over January 2003. The reason is that Charlie McCreevy wants to hide the massive 2002 increase in spending that got Fianna Fail re-elected. So he 'moved' a lot of 2002 spending into 2003. The Greens want a diferent system of accounting that will stop this kind of book-fixing. read full story / add a comment

While of course the Irish law enforcement authorities have a duty to intern the US armed forces and their aircraft at Shannon, and no amount of "security breaches" around the perimeter fence could come close to the risks posed by the bomb laden US military cargo aircraft at Shannon... this one *is* a gem... His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi proclaimed the readiness of his Global Country of World Peace to achieve the "seemingly impossible - to transform today's problem-ridden world by creating prevention-oriented, problem-free administration in every country. To do so, Maharishi revealed his Vedic technologies of consciousness to eliminate "karma" - to prevent the negative influences of past wrong actions by a nation's people from creating new problems and suffering for the whole country. read full story / add a comment

There seems to be something a bit odd happening on RTE in the last few days. I'm sure that most people can agree that our state/commercial news sources are far from unbiased but I think that there has been a new tendency towards a more overt slant recently. read full story / add a comment

According to the article, The Regime is sputtering with rage over Chirac's refusal to accept his marching orders against Iraq. The Regime has also expressed its contempt for the German government. An observation here: The position that Chirac has taken is commendable as far as it goes, but unless Iraq is placed under the protection of a French nuclear umbrella a la USA and Japan, the end result looks like it's going to be the same. As Arundhati Roy has pointed out, it is not sufficient to confront Empire, it is necessary to place it under siege. read full story / add a comment
