The Blob has sunk to new depths in its quest to destroy educational freedom. No wonder, says Randall Hardy. It's only the right to withdraw children from the state system that restrains its worst indoctrinating tendencies.

Úachtarán na hEireann, Mary McAleese, has condemned recent racist incidents in Belfast.

Speaking at an event in Belfast, she said that the Chinese community had honoured Ireland by choosing to make the Island their home, and condemned recent attacks on homes and businesses.

The event, a breakthrough in community relations work in Belfast, was also attended by Belfast's new Lord Mayor, Tom Eakin, of the cross-community Alliance Party.

Some felt that the event was somewhat undermined by the joke made by the President that if the Chinese hadn't brought their wonderful cuisine to Ireland her children would have died of starvation a long time ago.

Despite this apparently patronising gaffe, the President was well received and the event was hailed as a success by all involved. read full story / add a comment

"UNCTAD´s Least Developed Countries Report 2004, provides the first comprehensive empirical analysis of the relationship between trade and poverty in the least developed countries (LDCs). The Report shows that export growth was rarely associated with sustained poverty reduction in the LDCs during the 1990s, even though trade contributes a high proportion of their GDP and most of them have undertaken far-reaching trade liberalization.

Persistent mass poverty in the LDCs is not due, according to the Report, to lack of integration into the global economy, nor to insufficient trade liberalization, but is rather the consequence of underdevelopment. In fact, the evidence indicates that the extensive trade liberalization has thus far not resulted in a form of integration that will support sustained and inclusive development. Moreover, trade liberalization has actually worsened the trade balance in LDCs." read full story / add a comment

Many supporters of peace in the Middle East are very intimidated by being labled Anti-Semetic. So successful has the campaign to identify anything other than official Isreali government policy as Anti-Semetic that it has become very difficult for people to express any criticism againest the Tel-Aviv government..

A question often debated by activists is whether or not to ‘mask up’. It seems the main argument against ‘masking up’ is accountability. People feel that they have a right to protest and thus have nothing to hide. Which is fair enough, but people who have been on protests on this island recently will be only too familiar with the sight of a uniformed garda filming from the side-lines. This increase in garda surveillance makes one feel uneasy, but even more so in light of the recent EU summit on Biometrics. It was held in Dublin on Monday and Tuesday (June 14 and 15). read full story / add a comment
