Substantial work has been done by each Presidency since 1999 in their examination of this proposal and the Irish Presidency will actively continue the process of reform with the aim of reaching agreement with the European Parliament before the end of the Parliaments term in May 2004.
In addition the Irish Presidency in co-operation with the Hungarian govt., will host a conference in Budapest in May 2004 involving all 25 member states.
This conference will address both the implications of the reform of (EEC)1408/71 for all member states and the particular implementation challenges facing the new Member states.
This will be among the 1st EU Social Policy Conferences to take place after the formal accession of the new member states." read full story / add a comment

An Ógra Shinn Féin motion calling on the party to boycott the World Economic Forum was passed at todays Ard Fheis in the RDS, Dublin. The motion which was opposed by the Ard Comhairle went to a recount and was passed by a slim majority.

The Ard Comhairle backed ammendment called for a review of the partys position. However a number of speakers opposed this and called for a decision for or against.

This is the first time SF have actually formally taken a position on the WEF.

The following motionon on the agenda, also tabled by Ógra Shinn Féin, mandated the party to send a delegation to the next WSF. This motion was passed unanimousely. read full story / add a comment

When a publican wants to renew his license to sell intoxicating liquor we are all equally entitled to make an objection, in writing or in person to the District Court. If the same guy wanted to start, say, a salmon farm in a nearby estuary (polluting it), he would have to post notices in the papers to alert the public of his plans, who once again could try to stop him with objections and appeals. If his business involved selling lethal weapons for export to regimes which torture and kill their opponents, guess what, his license application would be dealt with in secret by Mary Harney's functionaries in the Department of Trade, Enterprise and Employment. No public scrutiny, not even parliamentary scrutiny. read full story / add a comment

Just been glancing through the Sinn Féin motions list for their conference this weekend. There are a couple of interesting ones in it.

One motion states that the party will not go into coalition without any deal having an absolute commitment of opposition to privatisation.
Another calls for complete opposition to the Social Partnership PROCESS, whereas before they've only ever opposed the deals, not the process.
A motion from the party's youth wing calls for a boycott of the WEF, and two motions deal with both suppoting the Coca Cola boycott and refusing any further donations.

Will be very interesting to see which of these are passed, if any, and what the response of grassroots SF members will be if they're not.
On the other hand, if they're passed, does it indicate a move to the Left? read full story / add a comment

WORKERS SUSPENDED AS GOVERNMENT WEIGH IN AGAINST STRUGGLE FOR FAIR PAY

As we go to press Government and bosses have made good their threats of disciplinary action against workers fighting for an end to poverty pay in the Civil Service. Seven workers – all from the same department have been suspended for taking part in a work to rule. Four of the seven are shop stewards. This is clearly an attempt to break the union, NIPSA, and the resolve of its members in the CSA. read full story / add a comment

Many of you believe that this resolution is crucial in the Palestinian conflict, however you have voted on it without consulting with the Friends of Palestine. It may have been that you were busy in the preparation for Geneva Accords while voting for this resolution. It may be that now you will doubt your vote. The resolution that you have supported violates the basic legitimate Palestinians rights to “terminate the occupation”, and the right of return, which is recognized under international law read full story / add a comment
