After a 2 ½ day retreat of community building, prayer and reflection on the infant narrative of Mathew's Gospel and the ignored yet deeper meaning of Christmas that is revealed in Scriptures, 30 brave souls gathered at the main gate of Offutt Air Force Base at 12:30 p.m. on Dec 28th, the Catholic Feast of the Holy Innocents. Their purpose was to bear witness to a truer and deeper meaning of Christmas by connecting the mission and work of Offutt's Strategic Nuclear and Space Commands to the killing of the innocent children of Bethlehem as reported in Mathew's Christmas story. ... read full story / add a comment

In a few days mostly un-noticed by most, EU presidential power will go from the UK to another member of the 25 states, the lucky recipient is Austria. Austria has quite a history, it used have an empire. & in the last years almost all of its ex-posessions have joined the Europe of 25. It is also a neutral state, its neutrality being a condition of its post war occupation and partition when rather than being held responsible for WW2 it was declared the first victim of Nazism. Despite the fact that Hitler was an austrian and the majority of Concentration camp directors were austrian too. ... read full story / add a comment

indymedias elsewhere seem to have found translations of the word 'indymedia' to their respective languages. Although English is the predominant language on www.indymedia.ie, linguistic diversity is welcome. Being based in Ireland, Irish IMC is best placed to give recognition to the Irish language. Homogeny suits hegemony, and linguistic diversity helps, when it comes to thinking in different ways. To this end, translating the word 'indymedia' or 'independent media centre' to Gaelic, also involves translating the concept - one which may mean different things to different people. In keeping with the democratic nature of indymedia, it is important that as many people as possible contribute to the discussion. People don't need fluency to have a perspective. ... read full story / add a comment
