Seomra Spraoi ; an autonomous social centre for Dublin
dublin / arts and media Saturday February 04, 2006 - 20:08 by Seomra Spraoi   image 2 images
After months of searching, followed by cleaning, scrubbing, sanding, painting and varnishing, the Seomra Spraoi (room of fun) collective has begun to open its doors. The collective took a space some months back in a prime city centre location, Middle Abbey Street, and soon began to have small meetings, events and gatherings there.

At present, the centre is open 2-6pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Anyone can drop in and view the forgotten zine library and the Bad Books library, have a cup of tea or simply relax and spend some time finding out more about what’s going on in Dublin. If you would like to use the space anytime contact Seomra Spraoi via the website, mailing list or email: [email protected]

A protest by Irish fishermen is currently (Friday Feb 3rd 1pm) taking place on the Liffey by the IFSC in Dublin. A whole fleet of trawlers are currently on the Liffey making a racket with their horns. They are protesting over a new Sea Fisheries Maritime Jurisdiction Bill currently before the Dáil. Among the proposals int the new bill is an amendment to allow the Irish Navy open fire on trawlers, who disobeyed instructions. This has since been scrapped but there are many other amendments before the Dail which challenge the rights of these workers. See below for further details:- ... read full story / add a comment
