'Eco-anxiety' affects 78% of children under 12, a crisis that teachers say they are unable to cope with, new polling by Greenpeace has found. The solution? More ruthless exposure of children to alarmist material.

The German company BASF Plant Science GmbH (an affilate of the giant transnational chemicals and drugs company BASF) has notified the EPA of its intention to deliberately release GMO potatoes into the environment 9km south of the Hill of Tara, on a 2 Ha plot at Arodstown, Summerhill, Co. Meath. The site is located 2km north of the R156 road between Dunboyne and Summerhill (approx. OS grid reference: N 885 500). If given the go-ahead, this would be the first Irish release of GMO crops since protestors ended Monsanto's GMO beet trials in 1998. The Notification submitted by BASF does not appear to include plans for any environmental impact assessment. Farmers, environmental groups and consumers have expressed total opposition to this unwanted experiment which would terminate Ireland's economically valuable GM-free status. The deadline for related public submissions to the EPA is 5pm on 22 February 2006. ... read full story / add a comment

Gerry McGeough, who campaigned for the fascist. Justin Barett in the European elections, appeared on WBAI's Radio Free Eireann today. RFE is hosted by John McDonagh, the representative of Republican Sinn Fein in New York. McGeough said that informers were not now even getting a rap on the knuckles. He said an appalling vista presented itself. He appealed to RFE not to let people like Niall O'Dowd off the hook. O'Dowd, said McGeogh, is an empty vessel. ... read full story / add a comment

a Brief report on the issues raised at "the Civil Society and Drugs conference" organised by the directorate-general Justice, Freedom and Security of the European Commission which has just closed in Brussels, Belgium.
ENCOD (European Coalition for Just and Effective Drug Policies), is a platform of 120 Civil Society Organisations from 24 European countries.
ENCODs coordinator, Joep Oomen, says: "By keeping the citizens away from the decision-making forums, they thought they could hide the truth about the war on drugs: that is a costly, failing and counter-productive affair." ... read full story / add a comment

Its been just over a year now since the last ISF so maybe we should have another one this year. There has been lots of activism since then and the movement for global justice [or whatever we are called] has a lot to link up about. On top of that the ESF is back this year, this time in Greece. Is anyone bothered? A crowd of us think that people should get together and talk about it. Here's the proposal:

The first ISF Working Groups meeting of 2006 is on Thursday 9th February from 7.30 to 9.00pm
NB Change of venue: THE TEACHERS CLUB, PARNELL SQ., DUBLIN 1 .

A few Dublin-based activists who worked with the ISF Working Groups for the 2003 and 2004, 1st and 2nd ISFs thought it would be good idea to hold a meeting, talk about the following points (below) and see where we go from there. If you would like to come, please read the WSF Charter Of Principles first and see if you are interested, available at: http://www.forumsocialmundial.org.br/main.php?id_menu=4&cd_language=2 ... read full story / add a comment

A group of students occupied the offices of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council today calling for grants to be paid on time. They were also calling for an increase in the income thresholds so that more students can avail of grants.

The council security who were initially irate calmed down after calling the Gardai who were in no mood to take on the students. The activists have been promised a meeting with senior council officials next week. ... read full story / add a comment
