WP NO TO NICE 2 Why the Workers' Party says No to the Treaty of Nice BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT On 7th June 2001, the Irish people will be asked to make an important decision on the future of this country by referendum. That decision will affect the life of each and every citizen . It could drag Irish soldiers into wars started and sponsored by powerful nations happy to use the smaller countries as their pawns. Even on the most benign interpretation the route proposed by the Government, unless resisted, will change fundamentally the rules and institutions of the European Community. Despite this it is virtually impossible to obtain a copy of the subject matter of the referendum unless you have access to the internet. This is a referendum conducted by stealth. What is it about? Why is the Government holding a referendum? Why the cloak of secrecy in what should ... read full story / add a comment

An examination of who is behind this apparently benign relationship reveals the little known European Round Table of Industrialists formed in 1983 with the help of European Commissioners. The ERT consists of the largest 46 transnational corporations in the European Community. They include Shell, BP, GEC and BT. ... read full story / add a comment

The Millennium marks over 2,000 years of European Imperialism, the ideological source of which was the Roman adaptation of Christianity. Ironically, imposing Christianity by the sword also marked the end for classical Roman Empire. Today in Brussels, as in imperial Rome, Euro-Federalism is imposed whilst swords are sharpened. ... read full story / add a comment

Four times in the past week or so citizens of this country have been expelled from Shannon airport while witnessing the illegal transit of foreign military personnel and hardware. Ejected, barred, car clamped, dragged into a van and driven out by the airport 'police'. And the serious crime that warrants this? Possession of a camera, binoculars and notebook. It seems Aer Rianta doesn't like publicity about the illegal use of Shannon airport, and doesn't mind abusing its power to stop it being reported. I think Inspectors O'Grady and Martin will get my gold star for petty harrassment. Oh, and moral cowardice. When told they might be called as witnesses in the high court, both of these grown men reused to turn around to see the aircraft or troops. ... read full story / add a comment

Paying the Blood Price BETWEEN SEPTEMBER OF LAST YEAR and June of this, an average of 6 American war planes a day have re-fuelled in Shannon airport. This is because they can carry more weapons, troops, and supplies if they stop in Ireland, than in Britain, as that way, being a shorter journey, they need less fuel. Protest On August 17th a 70 strong group of protesters defied police orders to stay outside the airport, and by mere fact of entering caused a warplane to leave without refuelling. On August 31st there was a 24 hour women’s peace camp outside the airport, with an information stall in Shannon town itself which got a good reception. On September 1st there was a small picket outside the main terminal building. On the night of September 3rd activists got onto the runway and spray painted a warplane. A national demonstration at Shannon airport has been ... read full story / add a comment

Has it not occured to many of these contributors that ANARCHY might be attracting attention? I´m not stupid, its obvious to me and many of my friends [hard-working ordinary people] that many of the usual leftwing alternatives have failed. Its obvious to me that genetics and other science have changed the landscape. Its obvious to me that if Bush and Ahern and the others are talking about "globalisation" that means the planet and the planet is not only Europe or American. I mean what do ordinary hardworking muslims make of the propaganda being thrown at them. ... read full story / add a comment

An adjournment was sought to join the Arts Council as defendants in proceedings at a recent employment tribunal. The case was brought by Stella Coffey, its former chief executive, against the Artists Association of Ireland (AAI). The opening-type statement described the case as rooted in the AAI’s difficulties with the Arts Council, which disingenuously rejected the AAI’s 2000 accounts and withheld a significant part of its funding leading to a crisis. A flawed consultant’s report - writer was introduced by the Arts Council - was followed slavishly by the AAI board and resulted in the chief executive being made redundant. ‘The direct influence of the Arts Council in the AAI’s affairs’ is of great relevance now that ‘the AAI appears to be closing down its doors’ stated Coffey’s counsel as he sought to join the Arts Council in the proceedings. His request was refused as was his request to appeal the ... read full story / add a comment
