Peaceful plane-spotting gets them thrown out of the airport. Four times in the past week or so citizens of this country have been expelled from Shannon airport while witnessing the illegal transit of foreign military personnel and hardware. Ejected, barred, car clamped, dragged into a van and driven out by the airport 'police'. And the serious crime that warrants this? Possession of a camera, binoculars and notebook. It seems Aer Rianta doesn't like publicity about the illegal use of Shannon airport, and doesn't mind abusing its power to stop it being reported. I think Inspectors O'Grady and Martin will get my gold star for petty harrassment. Oh, and moral cowardice. When told they might be called as witnesses in the high court, both of these grown men reused to turn around to see the aircraft or troops. We're about as democratic as we are neutral. Very early one morning Conor Cregan, from Shannon town was sitting in the otherwise empty viewing gallery of Shannon airport. He was dragged out, put in van and driven out to the industrial estate and told if he returned within 24 hours he would be arrested. A couple of days later, he was ejected from the gallery again. I went out with him about 2 days later. We went up to the viewing gallery at the airport. No one else was there. We had notebooks, pens and binoculars. We continued our observations on a road at the back of the airport. This is parallel to the runway and about 50 feet from it. it is not part of the airport grounds, and the airport 'police' have no authority there. The yellow vans did their patrols and spotted us sitting there with our notebooks. they came closer, blidning us with the spotlight, even though the headlights were enough to see us by. This became a nightly routine, with different Gardai and even a Det. Sgt vsiting us. Some even had a look through our telescope at a US NAVY DC-9-33. That morning we went into the viewing Gallery for a closer look at an MD-11 belonging to World Airways. We got two visits from an apparently mute security guard. They asked us to leave (which we were already doing) and told us that it was illegal to take pictures in the viewing gallery! I argues that every one takes photos in the viewing gallery. Mr. O'Grady repeated his 'order' to leave. On Friday night we did the usual routine, out by the back. We had been in the viewing gallery for hours earlier on, and had been visited by airport security a few times, but they said nothing. When a L-1011 belonging to American Trans Air landed at 4:25 AM Conor and Aisling drove to the terminal to get some pictures of the troops as they got off the plane. True, it was in a limo car park. But, it was before 5 AM, about 10 empty spaces, and there were three other priavte cars parked there NOT clamped. Aisling paid the fine, got the clamp removed and we went back to the airport together to get pictures of the second lot of troops (on World Airways Md-11ER registration N277WA) We weren't there long when the rent-a-cop brigade came over telling us to leave as we were "taking photos of the fence" which was bad for security. As we were leaving 'Police Inspector' Martin arrived in the 'squad car' and very bullishly ordered us off the premises. That says a lot about them. Anybdy else want to check out the truth behind Shannon? You're welcome to come down and check it out with us. This situation needs more publicity, and more people seeing it for themselves. Don't forget the demo on Sat 12th. I'll be there if I'm not sleeping, having been up the night before plane-spotting.

Everyone involved in the IMC project must be grateful to Tim and the others who make the effort to go out to Shannon airport and then come back here to report what they've witnessed.
This is what makes Indymedia work -- this is what makes it different from news sources and discussion forums which rely on "what we're told" and "what the authorities say".
Take the time to go over to Shannon Airport and see it for yourself. If you're going over on the 12th, consider staying on longer or coming a day earlier even.
These people engaged in illegal actions at Shannon Airport must be subjected to the full rigour of the law. They are presenting a very negative and unrepresentive picture of the country to our American allies. The war against terrorism must be supported by all civilised peoples. Appreasment of aggression never works, remember Hitler? Our Government is to be congratulated for their solidarity with the American people.
Des O'Loan says...
"These people engaged in illegal actions at Shannon Airport must be subjected to the full rigour of the law."
Yes, these people allowing aircraft to illegally use our airports must be brough to book.
It's a pity we don't have some Afghan and Iraqi survivors down their to demand an explanation for the killing of their children.
But Des probably never troubles himself with that thought...
Dessy are you trying to provoke a response from Pat C and Co.
You should know that they take everything so seriously.

Not personally Des, but I do recall one very pertinent fact about Hitler.
This evil animal was aided with funds and arms (or should I say "dual purpose equipment" by a US banker called Prescott Bush. (Prescott, and Herbert Walker were working for Brown Brothers Harriman at the time if memory serves, along with the Dulles brothers, later of CIA fame.)
Prescott was indicted in 1942 for supplying the Nazis in the years before WWII and even during the war, before the US joined in.
That didn't stop him becoming governor, or his son president, or for that matter it's hardly mentioned in front of the current gimp in the white house, who is his grandson.
Ain't it funny how the bush family has a habit of getting rich by selling weapons to 'folks' that they later fight a war against? they get rich at both ends. Stop me if you see a pattern here, Des.
So, yeah, let's stop more Hitlers.
Let's take all the people who sell arms to evil tryants and chuck them in jail.
So hmmm.. Saddam... that's a few UK and US politicians for a start...
Osama Bin Laden --- Ronnie Reagan and Bush Sr.
Ariel Sharon - US, UK, Bertie Ahern and loads more
But hey, let's all ride a moral high horse led by the western leaders... and let them create more Hitlers. Good advice Des... Spot on..
The actual accumulation of observations and pictures with dates and times will help build a case for the prosecution of the Aer Rianta authorities engaged in the flouting of the constitution. That's why they're so desperate to stop us exercising our right to do so. The question is whether a subsidiary case can be made for action against the private security at the airport and the Gardai for harrasment.
It surprises me that the Gardai can find the time to interfere with peaceful, well-mannered and civic spirited citizens like Tim and friends when there's so much "street crime" and "public drunkenness" that they need draconian laws to cope with it.
This article is both incredibly informative and very well written. Keep up the good work. Don't let the pigs get you down.
I wonder who is giving the orders to harass you? Or are the pigs just taking upon themselves to be obnoxious to people they don't like? (ie: people who can think for themselves.)

make complaints to the ombudsmans office.
a public sector company cannot be allowed to get away with this. the ombudsmans office is genuinely independent. your complaints will be investigated.
Its not the plane spotting that gets you guys thrown out, its the history of you's vandalising and trespassing. Havn't been on the website in a while, nice to see some of you guys aren't living in the real world. Even better to still see Ireland lending a hand to these planes.
