Victoria Indymedia using Ireland as a fallback server![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Resist Locally, Post Globally! Solidarity from Victoria IndyMedia in British Columbia, Canada! Here's a bit of an early warning: you may find a sudden infestation of Canadians posting to your NewsWire in about 24 hours... Here's why: In the past the Victoria IndyMedia server has been taken out under suspicious circumstances during major demostrations and direct actions. (The weekend of a big union rally at the BC Legislature early this year our connection was mysteriously cut for the duration, and during the occupation of a local right-wing politician's office we were hacked down for the duration). In case of a repeat attack we have selected two 'fallback servers' within the Global Indymedia network. The fallback servers are: First Fallback: Adelaide IndyMedia at http://adelaide.indymedia.org.au/ Second Fallback: Ireland IndyMedia at http://www.indymedia.ie/ These servers were selected because they are outside of Canadian legal jurisdiction, and are in time zones where our posts will occur at non-peak hours, and will not be too disruptive of your local news. If Victoria IndyMedia goes dark, we will switch our posts to the Adelaide Indymedia NewsWire, and if that server goes down, we'll move on to Ireland Indymedia... "Resist Locally, Post Globally!" Just a clarification about the note posted above from Victoria IMC. We are not asking for admin access, or for anything other than the normal use of the newswire during a slack period on your server.
Since we plan to use Ireland as the 'second fallback' server, Victoria Indymedia would have to be knocked offline, and Adelaide taken down by a DDOS attack or something similar, for us to fallback to the Ireland box.
What we are essentially doing is establishing a prearranged 'meeting place' in a safe country for Victoria activist posts if our server is taken down.
I'm sure this won't violate your NewsWire usage policy, or require any special arrangements.
there are a little over 1 billion servers to the information superhighway in operation on our planet.
Of the IMC network there are several neutral states and more seeking independence from other supra-national states.
We advise you to switch to a non-patented source kernel operating system.
We advise you to divide your future postings between neutral and seeking independence sites.
Quebec is just down the road no?
We appear currently to be quite visibly in one of the phases of our ongoing project to reclaim our superinformation highway.
Print out your files if your printer is working.
Switch off your television.
don´t listen to any lies.
try and think in binary.
and don´t worry the internet is on your side.
It'll be good to have BC'ers posting to Indymedia.ie. Don't fall into the trap of taking the comments about Ray made by MrMgoo seriously though. If you want to contact the actual indymedia people as opposed to us random people on the newswire then you should get onto the imc-ireland mail list. You can find it through the usual channels.
I like the point made above by the gnome that there's a problem with indymedia.ie switching to non-Free source code for the server. Several people have pointed this out in a couple of posts, but it doesn't seem to be a matter of concern for some reason.
Our server stayed up and running without a hitch -- perhaps having announced fallbacks helped to 'vaccinate' us against a takedown :-)
Your support, suggestions and comments are much appreciated. We did -- belatedly -- contact the Ireland mailing list, sparking some fierce debate about whether it was bad form for one IMC to poach on another's NewsWire...
The prevailing view is that we should have asked first -- well in advance -- rather than just showing up and assuming it was OK. My mistake <:(
Solidarity!
