The Plowshares movement began when Elmer Maas & 7 others entered the General Electric Plant, in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, and took hammers to first strike nuclear weaponry in the Sept. of 1980. Elmer played a menitoring role to many of us who were to follow him into nonviolent disarmament, the courts and jails in a spirit of nonviolent reistance to the war making state. He died last wekend on an Atlantic Life Community retreat - peacefully in a chair after giving a presenttaion to resisters who had gathered. ... read full story / add a comment

News is circulating that yet another anarchist has died due to state repression on Mayday. Within hours of the Dublin anarchist picnic Nicolás David Neira Alvares was clubbed to the ground by up to eight police on the Bogota Mayday march and beaten on the head until he passed out. Police then prevented his comrades getting to him so it was some time before they could get him to hospital where he died earlier today. ... read full story / add a comment

In my last year of high school ('77), the right wing govt. led by Joh Bjelke Petersen banned all civil liberties in our Australian state of Queensland. Our society was dominated by a corrupt Irish (diaspora) police force willing to be used to crush civil liberties and a Calvinist govt willing to turn a blind eye to police corruption (cops running brothels, casinos & prottection rackets around drugs) The. Labor party offered little opposition as thousands of us who did were criminalised, raided, framed, blacklisted from work & run out of the state.

It unraveled when cops from Juvenile aid were out running child porn and the Fitzgerald Royal Commision kicking in sending the police comissioner to jail for 14 years and 5 govt. ministers to jail. Joh missed out on jial by one younger member of his party hanging the jury. The authoritarian culture, aboriginal deaths in custody is maintained by the present Labor Govt who granted Joh a state funeral this past week. ... read full story / add a comment

The election of Respect’s George Galloway in the UK general election should be welcomed by the anti-war movement – not least because it is a product of that very movement. Opinions differ, of course, as to the wisdom of the Respect project and the calibre of Galloway himself. The banner headlines greeting the highly publicised and clearly leaked intent of the PSNI and the British DPP to charge South Armagh father of two Sean Hoey with 29 counts of murder relating to the 1998 bombing of Omagh have been denounced by his solicitor as a "media stunt" .

More worryingly this is not the first such stunt attempting to portray Sean Hoey in the public mind as guilty of the heinous crime of mass murder .
