In 1986, former nuclear technician, Mordachai Vanunu, released photographs to the Sunday Times revealing that Israil had long produced and possessed nuclear weapons. Vanunu was then targeted by Mossad and lured to Rome. In Rome he was kidnapped by Mossad, drugged and put on a freighter to Israel. He has spent the last 18 years in Ashelon Prison (the first 11 years in solitary confinement). In that time he has become an international symbol of nonviolent resistance to nuclear weapons. A vigil at the Israeli Embassy on Pembroke Rd. Dublin 4 began on the eve of Mordechai Vanunu's release. The first couple of hours were in torrential rain. Adam from (Grassroots Network Against the War) and Ciaron & Damien (Dublin Catholic Worker) stayed throughout the night. They were joined through the evening by Martin & Ronan of the Spiritans, Tom (Palestinian Solidarity Commitee), a car load of Special Branch and a Garda who provided hot water for tea. ... read full story / add a comment

The report below is from Joss Garman, a student and anti-nuke activist with Trident Ploughshares (http://www.tridentploughshares.org/ ) and Greenpeace (http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/ ). You may have heard about their Vanunu-inspired "whistleblower" action at the UK's nuke HQ yesterday already - if not see link at end of report. It's an honour to know two of these thoughtful, courageous war resisters -- celebrate, Vanunu is free, the truth is out! ... read full story / add a comment

Over the last week the Gardai have repeatedly turned up on occasions where the Dublin Grassroots Network has been attempting ton inform the public about the Mayday protests. On each occasion they have demanded the names of the people there in what can only be a crude attempt to intimidate the protest organiser and reduce their ability to inform the public about the protesrs. BAGHDAD, IRAQ — Cars spin down the street at night, tricked out with blue neon lights and sporting CDs dangled from their rearview mirrors. Thriving shops blare 50 Cent's In Da Club, while the young techie at one of the numerous local Internet cafés prefers to blast Nirvana. Cell phones with personalized ring tones and text messaging are literally everywhere. And teenage gamers while away their afternoons playing Vice City and Tom Clancy's Medal of Honor. Anytown, USA?
