Gardai harassment of Mayday protest leafleting continues

news report
Thursday April 22, 2004 12:51 by Joe Black - WSM (personal cap)
Over the last week the Gardai have repeatedly turned up on occasions where the Dublin Grassroots Network has been attempting ton inform the public about the Mayday protests. On each occasion they have demanded the names of the people there in what can only be a crude attempt to intimidate the protest organiser and reduce their ability to inform the public about the protesrs. What are they afraid of you finding out? Last night Dublin Grassroots Network was carrying out two door to door leafleting runs in Cabra and Rathmines both of which had been publicly advertised on the indymedia website. It was a foul evening, the torrential downpour at 7pm delayed our start time. |

Don't give any cops your name unless you have their details as well.
By keeping a list of this harrassment, you can show it to be systematic.
Honestly, you'd think they'd think for themselves and not just follow politically motivated orders.
How many muggings took place elsewhere in Dublin while they were busy trying to intimidate you?
no one wants you in our citys get out and go home protest there instead!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't carry identification, cannabis, anything that's illegal etc. Be polite if they stop you but say as little as possible. Bring a camera, notepad, pen etc.. If you feel youre being harrassed, (quietly) take their details & post up them, photos, audio and/or footage on the internet. And if you feel youre being followed & harrassed - irrespective of WHO is doing it - you have every RIGHT to (attempt to) make a complaint at a Garda station. Take their badge numbers, the number plates of their vehicles. If they ask you what you're doing explain very politely that you're being harrassed and you're taking details for when you make a complaint.
The worst thing you can do is give them an excuse to harrass you further, so don't react angrily or shout abuse or break the law.
Because the law is on YOUR side. Don't let police state tactics win out.
Its my city as much as it is yours - personally I support democracy , freedom of speech and the right to protest . with people like you around it essential
