international / summit mobilisations / news report Thursday June 27, 2013 20:55 by Republican Sinn Féin
Republican Sinn Fein would like to thank the Conway Mill, Belfast for the use of its facilities; the Orient Pub on the Springfield Road for hosting a very successful function on the Friday night and David Rovics for supplying great music and song. To those who helped in making the Forum possible; to those who took part in the sessions and to those who travelled from various parts of Ireland and a special thanks to those who travelled from abroad. We would also like to say particular thanks to Roy Garland who offered a Unionist perspective to the Forum. We are grateful to him for such insightful contributions over the two days.

A booklet will be printed within a short time with the submissions made to the Forum which will make for fascinating reading. It will be available from the Head Office at 223, Parnell Street, Dublin 1. ///

It has been almost twelve years since the Genoa G8 2001 summit demonstrations descended into a Dantes hell for both sides. Amnesty itself has said of Genoa that there was ‘the biggest suspension of democratic rights in a western country since WW2’. My Name is Mark Covell and I was almost killed during the Diaz school raid. read full story / add a comment

One of the great problems that people encounter in making up their minds about the Lisbon treaty is that, depending on who you talk to, the treaty can appear to be an altogether different thing. According to those who are campaigning for a Yes vote, it merely serves to tidy up the existing European treaties, with a few changes to allow the EU to function more efficiently. read full story / add a comment

Medical authorities in Colombia have confirmed that president Uribe is currently infected with AH1N1 (or the dreaded swine flu). Colombian state press officer César Mauricio Velásquez told press that on return from the emergency summit called in Argentina to discuss new US bases to Colombia, Uribe suffered an exceptionally high fever and all the usual symptoms at which point they did the tests (& one presumes brewed up some chicken broth and ordered in some tamiflu). The Colombian state medical officer Juan Gonzalo López confirmed to press that the president is receiving clinical care at the presidential palace rather than in hospital.
On a trivial point this of course makes him the second head of state in the world to contract Swine Flu. The first was the president of Costa Rica, Oscar Arias who caught the virus during his attempts to broker a settlement between the legitimate and usurpist regimes of Honduras earlier this summer. read full story / add a comment

Their names are John Kerr, former British ambassador to US and deputy chairman of Shell UK, also Jeroen Van der Veer, CEO Netherlands.

Also present at this meeting were Irishman Dermot Gleeson who is or has been involved with Independent News Media, has recently resigned as Chairman of AIB and is chairman of UCC governing body since 2007 and another Irishman Peter Sutherland who is worth looking at on Wikipedia as someone who has his fingers in a lot of pies.

In 2001 G8 met in Genova.
They were violent days of the suspension of civil rights that still weigh on the collective consciousness, along with the memory and sorrow for the death of Carlo Giuliani.
They were also days in which the "greatest men of the earth" developed the new creed of liberal globalization as it was a new universal religion. read full story / add a comment

Foreignpolicy.ie has learnt that only a limited amount of EU legal instruments will be translated into Irish despite the fanfare of Irish becoming an “official” EU language.

A spokesperson for the Council has confirmed to us that regulation number 920/2005 only covers regulations adopted by co-decision. This means that laws adopted outside of co-decision will not be translated and importantly directives (one of the main sources of EU law), resolutions and decisions will not be translated.. read full story / add a comment
