Five Danish peace activists were this week sentenced to pay a fine of DKK 3,000 each as a penalty for protesting from the public gallery against the Danish parliament's decision of November last year to extend the duration of Danish troops' participation in the war in Iraq.

The text below is a translation of a press release issued by one of the activists.

Coverage on a Danish anti-war website includes photos of the action and four of the protesters:

We have it from Noel Dempsey that thre is no foundation to unsubstantiated rumours that SHELL and its asscociates in The Corrib Gas Field may have been generous with corporate hospitality to public servants.

In answer to a Parliamentary Question from Treveor Sargent, the Minister replied :

"There has never been sufficient corporate hospitality by any licensee involved in offshore exploration to warrant the necessity for a declaration under the [Ethics in Public ]Acts." ... read full story / add a comment

Deirdre Clancy gave the rest of her testimony, followed by Nuin Dunlop. The junior prosecutor bored the jury while he made insinuations about Ms. Clancy's religious beliefs, the existence of a ringleader in the group, and hidden desires to get arrested. The senior prosecutor tried to portray Ms. Dunlop as not having thought the action through very well. Both ladies explained quite well the real context and motives of their action, from what they knew of the impending shock and awe, and the concerns for the people in Iraq.
After lunch Cathy Kelly of Voices in the Wilderness and former UN Asst Secretary-General Denis Halliday testified as to what they had told the defendants about the situation in Iraq when they attended a peace conference in Kildare shortly before the action. Both of them related the first hand experience of the hard realities of Iraqi life to the jury as they had done to the defendants. This report is not verbatim, and is based on notes taken in court. ... read full story / add a comment

Urgent: two journalists detained in the repression by the police in Mar del Plata
The Alternative Media Network of Buenos Aires, Argentina
November 4th, 2005

Journalists Fernando Catz and Roger Sampedro, both with Indymedia, are among the 87 persons detained by the Federal Police during the repression unleashed this afternoon against Anti-Bush demonstrators.

We ask our fellow journalists to urgently disseminate this news by way of agencies, newspapers and websites in order to facilitate getting information on their location and to call for their release.

It is vital for all of those detained that the press take notice of them because in these past few years there have been scores of cases of misconduct, abuse and torture at the hands of the police in Argentina. ... read full story / add a comment

Workers in the wake of Katrina are trying to self organize and fight back. Some of us activists here in the US are trying to help them both by going there and also by sending financial and other aid. Our aim is to help the workers self organize as opposed to being pushed around by the government and its many agencies. Arising out of this self organizing comes increased consciousness about our own power and this can lead to increased consciousness and struggle in all other areas of all of our lives.

Tuesday saw the continuation of Ciaron's testimony, and Damien Moran took the stand, to not only explain what he did and why, but at the request of the prosecutor, young Damo demonstrated the correct way to hold and use a hammer!
On Wednesday, 4 witnesses were in the stand. First, a retired RAF group captain gave expert testimony as to the effect that disrupting military supply lines has on a war effort. Then Jimmy Massey told the court about his time in Kuwait and Iraq as a US Marine Staff Sgt around the time of the action.
Karen Fallon spent 50 minutes in the stand telling it like it is, and Deirdre Clancy commenced her testimony, which continues tomorrow. Report based on our notes. ... read full story / add a comment

There are serious concerns over the 10 year timescale outlined in the announcement Transport 21 proposal relating to the Navan railway line.

In 1859, it took only 3 years to clear & build the 26 mile Navan line by hand, using picks and shovels. Work commenced in October 1859 and was completed in August 1862 - surely the line can be reopened much earlier than 2015 using modern track laying technology along the old allignment? ... read full story / add a comment
