What we have seen in Starmer since July is a petty, inhumane, almost spiteful man who considers himself morally superior to the mass of humanity. This, says Dr David McGrogan, was confirmed in spades yesterday.

a Brief report on the issues raised at "the Civil Society and Drugs conference" organised by the directorate-general Justice, Freedom and Security of the European Commission which has just closed in Brussels, Belgium.
ENCOD (European Coalition for Just and Effective Drug Policies), is a platform of 120 Civil Society Organisations from 24 European countries.
ENCODs coordinator, Joep Oomen, says: "By keeping the citizens away from the decision-making forums, they thought they could hide the truth about the war on drugs: that is a costly, failing and counter-productive affair." ... read full story / add a comment

Its been just over a year now since the last ISF so maybe we should have another one this year. There has been lots of activism since then and the movement for global justice [or whatever we are called] has a lot to link up about. On top of that the ESF is back this year, this time in Greece. Is anyone bothered? A crowd of us think that people should get together and talk about it. Here's the proposal:

The first ISF Working Groups meeting of 2006 is on Thursday 9th February from 7.30 to 9.00pm
NB Change of venue: THE TEACHERS CLUB, PARNELL SQ., DUBLIN 1 .

A few Dublin-based activists who worked with the ISF Working Groups for the 2003 and 2004, 1st and 2nd ISFs thought it would be good idea to hold a meeting, talk about the following points (below) and see where we go from there. If you would like to come, please read the WSF Charter Of Principles first and see if you are interested, available at: http://www.forumsocialmundial.org.br/main.php?id_menu=4&cd_language=2 ... read full story / add a comment

A group of students occupied the offices of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council today calling for grants to be paid on time. They were also calling for an increase in the income thresholds so that more students can avail of grants.

At a peace conference in Kuala Lumpur last month, the Kuala Lumpur Global Peace Forum of concerned peoples from all five continents, "outraged over the frequent resort to war", made a declaration to criminalise war.

"Killings in war are as criminal as the killings within societies in times of peace," the signatories, including two former Assistant Secretaries General of the United Nations, declare.

"Public servants and professionals, in particular in the medical, legal, educational and scientific fields, must promote peace and campaign actively against war," they declare, and this doctor wholeheartedly agrees.

Finally, the Forum resolved to establish a permanent Secretariat in Kuala Lumpur to implement the initiativeand to seek the cooperation of NGO's worldwide to achieve its goals. ... read full story / add a comment

Thanks to the cuddly, cute and soft nature of the seal cub (Pinnipedia Otariidae) many people on the left in Ireland acitvely oppose and further _boycott_ all things Canadian.

But Quebecois elections are always interesting. And as the Canadians (& Quebecois) have just elected a new government as a consequence of their 39th general elections : I thought to include them in the list of elections archived on the newswire.
64.5% of Canadians and Quebocois registered to vote did so. This means a "non vote" (for whatever reasons) of 35.5%.

"F4J leader Matt O'Connor announced last night (January 17) that he was suspending the operations of the group pending enquiries into allegations contained on the cover of this mornings Sun Newspaper that 'extremist sympathisers' associated with the group had planned to kidnap the Prime Minister's Son, Leo Blair.

F4J say they condemn any such action unreservedly and that the group is increasingly having it's name 'hijacked' by a growing number of militant extremists and that it would seriously consider the long term viability of the campaign.

The group say that ex members have reportedly been in contact with the Anti-Terrorist Unit SO13 from Scotland Yard who said that activists would be shot on sight if engaged in any protests in Westminster."

After over 60 years since their theft, or 30 years since the death of the thief, or a little over a year since the court order to return them, 500 boxes of Spanish Civil War archives were transferred under armed guard in the last 24 hours from Salamanca via Madrid en route to Barcelona.

An incident which did not occur without a near treasonous attempt to impede the lawful commands of the Spanish state by local authorities in Salamanca, Castille and Leon. The polemic and division in current Spanish society which focuses on the democratic wishes of the Catalans and their proposed "estatut"is part and parcel of what occured in Salamanca.
