The prosecution in the case have begun in the last hour or so to make their closing arguments to the Jury. It is likely that the defense will make theirs before the end of the day. There is a very very small possibility of a verdict late today. Most likely scenario is that tomorrow will see a verdict in this trial. Frequent updates will be on indymedia.ie ... read full story / add a comment

SUMMARY Kathy Kelly finally gave her evidence on Monday. She spoke quietly about the chilling effect of the sanctions that had been imposed on Iraq after the 1991 war, of the devastation caused to the country, the lack of water and electricity, the ilnesses and diseases, the lack of medical supplies due to veto, the deaths of over 500,000 children between ages 0 to 5, the deaths of 1.5 million Iraqis due to sanctions (a quarter of the estimated number of Holocaust victims), the fear of the people before the Shock and Awe blitz of March 2003, how she related her first-hand experiences to the defendants, her acquaintance with Denis Halliday who had resigned as Assistant Sec General of the UN because of his disagreement with the sanctions. Mr Halliday who was sitting in the court..was pointed out by Senior Counsel Brendan Nix She described in detail the photos she had brought from Iraq which became part of the defendants' shrine In a day of high drama, there were numerous objections raised, followed by interruption of evidence and jury retirements. ... read full story / add a comment

Kathy Kelly is a person of profound integrity, who knows how to walk the walk. She will testify at the trial of the Pitstop Ploughshares tomorrow in the Four Courts. In a climate in which the issue of Iraq and the use of Shannon has been put on the back burner for many, Kathy Kelly is there to remind us of what things are like on the ground for the ordinary people of Iraq as they continue to struggle with the ongoing daily realities of depleted uranium effects and ever escalating violence. Kathy has been a loyal and consistent supporter of the five on trial, having travelled to each of their trials and remained consistent in her support throughout the three-and-a-half years of legal proceedings. ... read full story / add a comment

The Dublin Shell to Sea Table Quiz is organised for Thursday the 13th of July in Doyle's Pub (opposite Trinity College, near Pearse Street Garda Station). It runs from 8pm to 11pm and teams of 4 will compete in ten rounds of questions. Residents in the locality have been warned that a dangerous, experimental raw quiz is planned to be installed in the area. The questions will be odourless, and at many times the pressure of a normal quiz. In the event of raffle, everyone in the audience might win a prize. And on foot of that attractive advertisement, I bravely went.............. ... read full story / add a comment

Today's Sunday Independent carries two advertisements seeking to recruit Irish people to work as Sales Representatives for a company, apparently called 'Exchange', whose sole function is to sell cars, motorbikes and utility vehicles to US military personnel serving abroad. These particular adverts are looking for people to service the US war machine in Iraq, Kuwait and the Middle East in general. Those employed will be based on US military facilities in Iraq and Kuwait. Prospective applicants are directed to a website, which carries the company motto: 'The only overseas car-buying program created by the [US] military, for the military'. It is a disgrace that an Irish newspaper is carrying advertisements recruiting civilians to service the US war machine in Iraq. Those who consider applying should bear in mind that they will be viewed in Iraq as servants of the US military and their lives will be at grave risk. Holding Irish citizenship will make no difference. ... read full story / add a comment
