Favio Zanonato the mayor of Padova, Italy elected as a social democrat has astounded rights groups worldwide and provoked polemic indignation in his own city with what he terms a "temporary measure". A troublesome neighbourhood and its core complex of flats which are home to marginalised migrant groups and native Italian poor with high instances of drug use and sale has been walled. Construction workers arrived without prior warning and erected in one day a security fence of 4 milimetre thick steel fencing and 3 metres high around the flats. Only one entrance or exit has been left where residents and visitors alike must submit to searches by the police before passing through. ... read full story / add a comment

The 9 have been charged with the scheduled offences of Unlawful Assembly and Aggravated Burglary. Some (if not all) are appearing before 'Londonderry' Court House on Bishop St at 10 am today, Thursday. It's understood that some of them were held overnight at Coleraine PSNI barrackes and the rest at Strand Road Barracks. Not sure if the charges are under new so-called anti-terror laws, but will check. Noisy Protests have been called for 9.30 am outside Bishop st Court House in Derry. ... read full story / add a comment

At 4.00pm today (9 August), West Tyrone Ogra Shinn Fein held a spontaneous protest in Omagh to highlight the escalating barbaric massacre of the Lebanese people. The Lebanese cannot even bury their dead with dignity as only yesterday Israeli jets bombed a funeral cortage killing 13. Over 1000 leaflets where distributed in the County town of Tyrone to raise awarness about the barbarity and to make a stand against the atrocity. Passing cars honked their horns in support of the protest and many people passing through the town stopped to either join in with the protest or to talk to those handing out leaflets. Local Sinn Fein Councillor Martin McColgan and Barry McElduff MLA where in attendance at the protest. ... read full story / add a comment

Anti-war protesters this morning occupied American arms manufacturer Raytheon's Derry office, with nine people barricading themselves into the building and decommissioning vital equipment including computers. According to the anti-war activists involved, the computer system was "completely disabled". It is understood that thousands of documents and dozens of computers were burned and thrown from windows by members of a group that entered the building at 8a.m. this morning. Among those in the premises to protest against the world's largest missiles manufacturer was veteran socialist and civil rights campaigner Eamonn McCann. ... read full story / add a comment

Unfortunately for the Labour Party- who today, released a press statement, (The Annual Press Release about how expensive it is to send a child to school). About a 1000 euro's per child. Which when you think about it , is pretty crazy. This is the state school sector: who send parents letters about registration fees (an annual thing now) wherein, in secondary, you have to re-register your child every year for a suggested fee. Then there is the locker fee, the voluntary subscription (suggested amount 150 per child) The books, shoes (they wear out damn quick). Registration, suggested donation, locker fee and books : about 500 euros per secondary school child. (and More) ... read full story / add a comment

The second week of August is the peak vacation week for citizens of the EU. Over 200 million EU citizens are not presently at their usual workplace or abode. Many (but not all) choose sunny destinations with the Mediterranean coast and the various EU archipelagoes enduring in popularity. Of course, not all EU citizens enjoy the fun, the month of August annually sees the most lay-offs and timed bankruptcies in continental Europe, whilst both law firms and trade unions are temporarily unavailable to help or counsel the "shafted workers". August and summer also see precarity peak, there is undoubtedly much employment available in tourist sectors but the pay is low and security non-existent. August also sees the influx of African migrants peak. A short article on "spoiling your holidays". ... read full story / add a comment

About 70 people turned out at 2pm on Saturday at Daunt Square in Cork for a vigil in solidarity with the Lebanese and Palestinian people, and in opposition to the widespread and devastating Israeli military attacks on civilians. Organised by the Cork branches of Anti-War Ireland, the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the IAWM, the attendance was diverse, and included members of a variety of left-wing groups. Hundreds of Anti-War Ireland leaflets were handed out, calling for workplace and trade union 'blacking' of Israeli goods. The reaction from passers by was overwhelmingly positive and many promised not to buy Israeli products in future. Cork AWI has also produced stickers urging people to boycott Israeli products and these have begun to appear throughout the city centre. ... read full story / add a comment

On Sunday 6th of August 2006 the Unmanageables laid flowers on the Hiroshima memorial stone in Merrion Square. They used child-sized puppets to draw attention to fact that children have been the main victems of the war in Lebanon. A letter was handed into the Taoseach's office calling on him to get off the fence and condem the war. Afterwards the Unmanageables held a fifteen minute vigil outside the Israeli Embassy ... read full story / add a comment

If you think of North Antrim, or Indeed Ireland, then the first natural wonder that you think about is the Giant's Causeway. So where better to send a message of solidarity to the oppressed people of Lebanon from, than the stoney steps of the Giants Causeway. This was one of only a number of events held at in North Antrim this weekend. North Antrim Ógra Shinn Féin organised a very successful, packed weekend of events recently (4-6 August). ... read full story / add a comment |
