European gas prices recently went above ?58 per megawatt hour ? the equivalent of $100 per barrel of oil. This is "absolutely destructive for energy-intensive manufacturing", in the words of one industry analyst.

Any electrician knows that Lego bricks are genderless, not 'heteronormative', because each can 'mate' with any other. Perhaps Science Museum staff should study to be electricians and actually make themselves useful.

Any parent can currently withdraw their child from school if they're unhappy. Labour's Schools Bill ends that right for many, giving local authorities a veto. That's why all parents should protest against this state power grab.

A large crowd turned out in Belfast city centre today for the May Day parade. I'm no good at calculating numbers so I'll just let the photos speak for themselves.

If anyone feels the need to use any of the photos from the parade, could you please credit me with taking them? Either that or you could give me a couple of quid; I don't mind either way. ... read full story / add a comment

We at Pioneers for Peace are pleased to announce that our second meeting on the 4th of May went very well. The following is a summary of the debates and discussion that occurred which further proves how torn and confused Americans are over the war in Iraq. One of the major hurdles we must overcome is the american superiority complex and how we are unaware of how military operations in Iraq affects the security and well being of other smaller countries. America has so much influence on the world that its past Kerry vs. Bush election was more important to the people in areas like Nigeria, and wealthier countries like Germany than elections in their own nations. When americans vote they do not always understand that they are not only voting for themselves but influencing every country in the world. In West Virginia people often wonder if enough people even vote to make local elections valid so voter apathy as americans should be nearly the equivalent of committing a crime.
The great country of Ireland has become a warmongering nation and potential terrorist target due to its cooperation with the abused US military by allowing warplanes to land and refuel there which are on their way to perpetuate crimes against peace & humanity in Iraq and Afghanistan. Peace activists worldwide such as Ireland's own Mary Kelly are referring to the United States as the largest terrorist organization in the world so we at Pioneers for Peace organized a debate with pro war americans to delve deeper and perhaps come to a better understanding. Michael Moore himself said something like its no fun to interview people that always agree with you and more can be learned when opposites collide.

Two weeks ago, on a routine visit to monitor the on going war crimes that is the Bertie Ahern led governments facilitation of the of the US military troops and intelligence services (CIA) at Shannon Airport, I witnessed a new devolvement at Irelands second international airport. Sitting on the main apron in front of the terminal building was an Israeli Air Force 707. After a while a group of military types disembarked and jumped into the “Fixed Base Operator” minibus. They were taken to the Great Southern Hotel where they billeted overnight.

Initially I thought this an emergency landing. Shannon Airport has been used on numerous occasions by the US Air Force to land aircraft in trouble. The latest happening only months ago when a C17 reported to be carrying Helium (yeah right) landed safely.

Today the Israeli Air Force is Back in Shannon.

Socialist members of the European Parliament's committee investigating the CIA's activities in Europe have called for a NATO representative to appear before the committee to answer questions concerning the possible involvement of the NATO-led Stabilisation Force in Bosnia and Herzegovina (SFOR) in the abduction of six people from Bosnia.

The call follows EU foreign affairs chief Javier Solana's denial of any knowledge of the CIA's use of European countries for the transport and illegal detention of prisoners, which he made in response to questions from members of the committee on Tuesday 2 May.

The TDIP committee's interim report dated 24 April proposes a resolution in which the European Parliament will judge it implausible that certain European countries have been unaware of extraordinary renditions that have taken place on their territory and in their airspace or airports, and will deplore the extraordinary rendition by Bosnian authorities of six persons of Algerian origin to agents of the CIA. ... read full story / add a comment

Bolivia has nationalised her fuel resources.

I'll bring you through it simply :-
* Last June Bolivia entered popular rebellion and verged on civil war.
* Morales emerged as popular leader of the Left & said if elected he would nationalise Fuel resources.
* He got elected. and sworn in 22/1/2006
* His thinking man Garcia Linera went about figuring out how that would happen.
* the oil companies (Repsol - Spain) said they'd sue if their investments were "misappropriated".
* Morales met Zapatero and promised he'd go about it easily in a staged way.
* Garcia Linera said it wouldn't be a surprise.
* May 1, 2006 morales put on his presidential sash and announced a presidential decree.
* May 2, 2006 the Bolivian army accompanied by Police in riot gear turned up at the installations kicked every inside out, and put up banners "nationalised for the Bolivian people".

Listening to the debate on privatising Aer Lingus, sometimes I wonder. Don't worry this is not going to be a column about Aer Lingus. I think there is one issue that is clear whether you like privatisation or not. Having a privately run Irish Aer Lingus connecting Ireland to the rest of the world is not what we will have 5 or 10 years down the line. We will have a formerly Irish airline bought by a newer and much richer airline for its prime airport piers and landing rights, flying wherever will make the most money.
