Are people who eat organic food really as virtuous as they think? A new academic paper has found that, in fact, they score higher on the 'dark triad' traits of narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy.

Protest @ Mansion House

Freedom of speech in Dublin. Fighting the poster ban ...
protest_the_ban.jpg

We`ve got rubber gloves and are not afraid to use them ! With Pinnie's instead of Petticoats the ladies of The Unmanagable Collective took to the streets ready to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in to this dirty attack on democracy which is the poster ban in Dublin.

With a collection of cleaning implements and marrigolds all round they joined with those from the Freedom of Speech in Dublin campaign and desended on the Mansion House to confront the Lord Mayor on the issue.

Great to see some people challenging this ban. Other than the fact that it exists, though, Im not sure how it was introduced and why. Not many people outside Dublin seem to be aware of it. It would be awful if it was extended nationwide so worth making this into a big issue for the election (along with a million other things) to try and help prevent that happening.

How can I joing the group, btw?

The action taken this morning around the Mansion House was the first move by the recently created alliance of anti-war and anti-censorship groups. The alliance has had two plenary meetings so far and a couple of sub groups are preparing submissions to the third meeting, due to take place on 2.30, Saturday May 13th in the Teachers Club.
In the meantime, one constituent part of the alliance, the iawm, is organising a vigil/ picket outside the US Embassy in Ballsbridge at 2.30 on Saturday May 6th with the theme of: STOP WARMONGERING ON IRAN. The Unamanegeables will be there. Hope you can all join.

The picket attracted members of various campaigns and groups, including Save Tara, Cosantoiri Siochana, Dublin Catholic Worker, IAWM, Shell To Sea and The Campaign For Free Speech.

"The Coat of Arms of the City of Dublin was first granted officially to the municipal authority, Dublin City Assembly in 1607. It includes the ancient device of the three castles, which has been the symbol of the city since the Middle Ages.
The three castles are shown on the 13th century Dublin City Seal as three watchtowers surrounding one of the gates of the medieval City Wall. In the central watchtower two sentries sound the alarm, while in each of the other two towers an archer stands with cross-bow at the ready. The scene is symbolic of the readiness of the citizens to defend the city.
With the passage of time, the three watchtowers became three separate castles, with three battlemented towers in each castle. Flames now appear from the towers in place of the sentries and archers. It is often supposed that the Castles are on fire, but in fact the flames symbolise zeal; they represent the zeal of the citizens in defence of Dublin. "

The Coat of Arms is completed by the city’s motto in Latin which reads: “Obedienta Civium Urbis Felicitas” which can be translated as “Happy the city where citizens obey”

John Kelly has asked for the following to be published:

*****************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

A letter was handed into the Mansion House today May 4, 2006 for the attention of the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Fine Gael Councillor Catherine Byrne. A cover copy was sent to the Deputy Lord Mayor, Green Party Councillor Bronwen Maher. The Lord Mayor is empowered to elevate any issue s/he considers to be of importance to the commencement of each council meeting. A motion to be voted upon by the Councillors to revoke the ban on notices of public assembly has been on the agenda of DCC since last year.

The Campaign for Free Spech in Dublin outlined its position on the ban to the Mayor and stated .."We are now calling publicly upon you, as first citizen of Dublin, to exercise your power to elevate the motion to revoke this ban. The motion has, as you know, been on DCC's agenda since last year. This blanket ban has been condemned by the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) as representing a violation of the European Convention on Human Rights Act, 2003 and the Irish Constitution. We trust you will attend to this matter with the urgency that it deserves".

The next meeting of DCC is Monday May 8, 2006 at City Hall. This may well tell a tale about FG and the Lord Mayor. Hopefully they will respect the Constitution, the ECHR and what is essentially a basic civil right.

John Kelly CFSD

PS : Many thanks to all who attended, especially given the weather. If we need to revisit the Mayor's residence again perhaps we will make it a family day, on a weekend ? Who knows what might happen. One sure thing, all social changers and human rights campaigners are hamstrung by this unconstitutional ban. J K

As for me. I had great fun. Notice not a single frown in any picture. We normally get called whingers and whiners. I reckon we handed a letter into some though.

Miriam C. You've been championing free speech for a long long time, you already are a member. I'd love to see you at the meeting at the Teacher's Club on the 13th.

I'd like to comment on the fact that the Gardaí sent some gentlemen to this demo. And that they behaved as gentlemen too.

Readers will note from what has been posted already that Posters of Enda Kenny survive the illegal ban on public notices. Maybe it's because he and the mayor hang out in the same party.

Have a word with your lackey Enda.

Tis upon mature recollection - and subsequent re-reading that I note Miriam may have been asking about membership of the Unmanageables. If this is the case I've messed up - unfortunately I'm not a member of the Umanageables and I'm not in a position to offer membership.

Regardless as to whether I got it right or wrong, you'd be welcome to the meeting I mentioned and/or to the demo this Saturday.

My apologies to all concerned.

just taking the opportunity afforded by the comments section to state that I am politically unalligned;
the unmanageables is a group of women from different campaigns who are delineating politcal concerns and having a bit of craic.(though we are deadly serious too). Out of principle I attend anti-war marches , but am not a member of IAWM or any other organisation. It works for me and for other members to feed into the unmanageables. To date we have not created a mission statement nor do have one. We create visual , spontaneous actions. the unmanageables work, therefore because the structure is 'floating' and everyone discusses actions freely.

F. S.-S. was one poster-bearer & pamphleteer not yet honoured & eulogised across the island as an honourable executed hero of 1916. My apologies of course, humble & sincere, if the man in the last photograph didn't intend on looking Sheehy-Skeffingtonesque. & I hope he isn't offended at comment on the resemblance. Hmmmm perhaps he never noticed. hmmm Inconceivable that he earns a living as a Francis Sheey Skeffington impersonator. hmm he could do a young George Bernard Shaw & make ends meet.

If our nation had grown up to take her place amongst the likes of Montenegro & Iraq today with FrancisSheehy-Skeffington still about, we'd all be vegetarian, pacifists, virgins till 22 but only if half-formally betrothed & really quite utterly in sincere love ..........
& even more....

we'd be happy with it.

¿ what went wrong? why are people still demanding the liberty to inform fellow citizens of public assembly?

like tell us! please! who do we have to write letters to? is there a customer service care-number? Will this come up in election manifestoes? are 16th birthday parties covered counsel? do you spell manifestos with an "e" or is it a latin word? Questions like this, & more will be answered this week. keep logging on!

Well we certainly need some reanimation in this town given its stoic history of the lockout and the rising three years later.

God help us considering the meagre and lethargic response of the "left" and the "Republicans" to the violation of a basic civil liberty. Lets hope that any more messing around by City Hall on this issue will see a spirited response from people and groups who claim to be the inheritors of Connolly, etc.
