'Our justice system may be equipped to administer the law but they are not equipped to deliver justice'. This quote, from a man who spent three months in jail last summer for protecting his community in N.W. Mayo, makes an important distinction in terms of what to expect from the justice system in this country. My own experience of Galway District Court yesterday leads me to disagree and say this. They are not even equipped to administer the law, let alone justice.
Assaults by Garda Sgt No:RG33 Mick Clesham on Owen Rice's legal assistants and friends in the court lobby, denials to Owen Rice of private legal consultation, threats of contempt against friends and Indymedia writers taking notes in court, objections to and intimidation of a privately employed stenographer and the denial of Owen Rice's right to cross-examine prosecution witness Detective Sergeant Mick Coppinger are all considered 'normal' procedure at Galway District Court according to Judge Mary Fahy and Galway Court Service Officer Ray Burke. ... read full story / add a comment

While sticky-handling the little chislers on the champagne trail, Fianna Fail spindoctor Parishpump McClient TD today refused to rule out or rule in coalition with other parties until after the general election. "We like to keep our options open, just like our pockets" he said "while believeing in neither left nor right we are at the same time the only real socialist party in Ireland and the only party that makes sense for our beloved business community. We stand for Irish neutrality and sovereignty. At the same time we suck up to the yanks and want to beef up Fortress Europe. We are the Karma Chameleons of Neoliberal Populism." ... read full story / add a comment

The Tom Johnson summer school - the annual summer school of the Labour Party took place during the weekend in Kilkenny. This year the Jim Kemmy award was given to the community in Rossport and Erris and was accepted by Vincent McGrath of the Rossport Five. The Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte T.D. presented the award. Past recipients of the award have included Rosanna Flynn of Residents against Racism and pro choice anti racist and community activist Cathleen O Neil. The award in memory of Jim Kemmy is given to people who courageously campaign and stand up for left wing political values. Vincent Mc Grath and the Rossport community were presented with an original and rare edition of Michael Davitts prison notes to symbolise the connection between Davitt and the current struggle of the people of Erris - both have fought for the rights of Irish people to own their land. ... read full story / add a comment

Aoibheann McNamara, proprietor of the Ard Bia restaurant in Quay Street and Seamus Sheridan, head honcho of Sheridan's Cheesemongers in Church Yard Street organised a collection today at the farmers’ market in Church Yard St in order to assist the beleaguered Lebanese who run the slow food market in Beirut - the moneys raised will be divided among the various families struggling to survive in their city and country viciously wasted by the Israelis. Judging from the evidence of my eyes the collection was handsome. ... read full story / add a comment

This is just a short account, and attempted analysis, of some news stories that have arisen in the last year or so in the general area of justice and intelligence agency activity in Ireland. [Explanatory comments on Kevin's news from the bunker are in italics below. Please note, the headline and article by Kevin Myers is not a spoof. He wrote this.] Irish Independent August 29, 2006 Kevin Myers ON Friday, June 23, in a village in Surrey, an old man breathed his last, and with him went a connection to one of the bloodiest episodes of the Troubles of 1919-21, and to another, and one of the strangest. Brigadier Mortimer Kelleher MC, aged 98, was the son of Jeremiah Kelleher, a general practitioner in Macroom, and the brother of Captain Philip Kelleher, DI, RIC. Like Mortimer, he was a holder of the Military Cross. [Good start, Kevin Myers carries his own cross for the British military.] ... read full story / add a comment
