Any electrician knows that Lego bricks are genderless, not 'heteronormative', because each can 'mate' with any other. Perhaps Science Museum staff should study to be electricians and actually make themselves useful.

Any parent can currently withdraw their child from school if they're unhappy. Labour's Schools Bill ends that right for many, giving local authorities a veto. That's why all parents should protest this state power grab.

The Raytheon 9, arrested on August 9 for disarming Raytheon, had a preliminary remand hearing today. They were escorted to the Court House in Derry by a large, noisy & colourful demonstration of support. Before going in Eamonn McCann, speaking on behalf of the 9, read out a statement (below). After they went in, representatives of the demonstration handed in the letter from the 99 signatories (also below). Yesterday, in Jerusalem the appeal of Mordechai Vanunu against the restrictions imposed on him by the State of Israel came before the Supreme Court. After his release from 18 years of imprisonment in April 2004, Vanunu was not truly free..The restrictions imposed by the State, among other things, denied him the right to freedom of speech and freedom of movement. These restrictions are in breach of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Yesterday, 6 September, was another day for Mordechai's appeal in court. ... read full story / add a comment

In order to force wild animals to perform stressful and often painful acts, trainers use metal bullhooks, whips, muzzles and electric prods. These horribly cruel training methods are commonly used in Irish circuses all over the country. This is part of ARAN’s ongoing campaign country wide to show the public that, animals in circuses have being taken from the wild at some stage in their life for a lifetime of boredom, misery, cheap tricks and cruelty. ... read full story / add a comment

Irish politician Gerry Adams, president of the Sinn Fein party, will on Wednesday speak to Palestinian politicians, some of them from Hamas, about the need for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and for a dialogue to achieve it.

Adams is also urging Israel to open a dialogue with Hamas and wants the European Union to drop its endorsement of Israel's conditions for such a dialogue - conditions that include Hamas recognizing Israel, abandoning terrorism and accepting previous Israeli-Palestinian agreements.

A LOCAL authority has come under fire after revelations it sold a prime development site in a thriving town centre for just €100. Leitrim County Council last week defended its decision to sell the town centre car park, which is estimated at being worth tens of thousands of euros. The land on Church Lane just off the Main Street in Manorhamilton was sold to the Manorhamilton Enterprise Forum Ltd, a voluntary group comprising of local businessmen. They have since sold it on to developers for an undisclosed "slight" profit who are in the process of building a major residential and commercial development on the site. The development was unsuccessfully appealed by a number of local residents to An Bord Pleanala in April and involved a petitions signed by Hundreds of local people. It has further emerged this week that the County Council have agreed to purchase back some of the development for €900,000. ... read full story / add a comment

'Our justice system may be equipped to administer the law but they are not equipped to deliver justice'. This quote, from a man who spent three months in jail last summer for protecting his community in N.W. Mayo, makes an important distinction in terms of what to expect from the justice system in this country. My own experience of Galway District Court yesterday leads me to disagree and say this. They are not even equipped to administer the law, let alone justice. Assaults by Garda Sgt No:RG33 Mick Clesham on Owen Rice's legal assistants and friends in the court lobby, denials to Owen Rice of private legal consultation, threats of contempt against friends and Indymedia writers taking notes in court, objections to and intimidation of a privately employed stenographer and the denial of Owen Rice's right to cross-examine prosecution witness Detective Sergeant Mick Coppinger are all considered 'normal' procedure at Galway District Court according to Judge Mary Fahy and Galway Court Service Officer Ray Burke. ... read full story / add a comment

The Tom Johnson summer school - the annual summer school of the Labour Party took place during the weekend in Kilkenny. This year the Jim Kemmy award was given to the community in Rossport and Erris and was accepted by Vincent McGrath of the Rossport Five. The Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte T.D. presented the award. Past recipients of the award have included Rosanna Flynn of Residents against Racism and pro choice anti racist and community activist Cathleen O Neil. The award in memory of Jim Kemmy is given to people who courageously campaign and stand up for left wing political values.

Vincent Mc Grath and the Rossport community were presented with an original and rare edition of Michael Davitts prison notes to symbolise the connection between Davitt and the current struggle of the people of Erris - both have fought for the rights of Irish people to own their land.
