A father says concerns over terrorism prompted him to alert authorities after opening a box of valentines that he bought for his daughter; now authorities are crediting his vigilance. Nicholas Poillucci says he was shocked when the box of valentines he bought for his three-year-old daughter contained the word "Jihad" -- a word commonly known to Americans as the Muslim word for 'holy war' -- followed by the message, "It's time to be mine." Concerned that the message might contain a hidden terrorist message, Poillucci called authorities. Officials are crediting Poillucci for demonstrating the awareness all Americans should have in the wake of September 11th. http://kdka.com/local/local_story_041181845.html ... read full story / add a comment

230 people attended Monday night's public meeting organised by the Galway Alliance Against War. The media presence, both local and national, was substantial. War is not inevitable, was the clear message from platform speakers, Denis Halliday and Michael D. Higgins. If enough of us rally on 15 February, the warmongers may yet be stopped. People were eager to go on the Dublin, to assist with banner-making, and to get involved in other ways. Buses have now been booked by a number of groups: GAAW itself, Galway Students Against War, Galway Trade Unionists Against War, Conamara in Aghaidh an Chogaidh, Galway Labour Party, and Galway Sinn Fein ... read full story / add a comment

Mr Begg, 35, who is originally from Birmingham, was grabbed in Pakistan in February 2002, bundled into a car boot and taken to Afghanistan. He is being held at Bagram airbase outside Kabul where the CIA allegedly uses sleep deprivation to break resistance. Some captives are placed in metal containers and the US has banned any independent inspection of the base. Privately, US officials have reportedly admitted to "stress and duress" techniques. ... read full story / add a comment

The disgusting nudist protesters against the war in Central Park are a warning about the lengths that these dangerous people will go to in order to weaken and attack the USA. This ranks together with the outrageous decision by France and Germany to withold military support to the USA and Britain and Turkey and our Eastern European NATO allies, and is a blatant attempt to sabotage the war effort. ... read full story / add a comment

Former UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq Denis Halliday is travelling around Ireland speaking at Anti-War meetings at present. If you get the opportunity go see him. He is inspiring and a great public speaker and source of information on the situation in Iraq at present. I transcribed this poem from my videotape of his talk in Clontarf last week. He wrote it last week on the train from Galway to Dublin. Audience hooted and hollered over the RTE reference. Big crowd at the meeting too. ... read full story / add a comment

Capitalism, patriarchy, racism, and corporate globalization are vile enough, but every so often -- and of course the mid century Nazis were a prime example -- something even worse tries to emerge out of still deeper layers of hell, and occasionally it does. And such a scourge of evil seems perhaps to be seeking entry into our world now, all the way from the seventh circle, or further. ... read full story / add a comment |
