Last October all people knew was that the FBI had physically seized an Indymedia server from a company called Rackspace in London. About 20 Indymedias were affected, some more than others. Rackspace said they had a gagging order placed on them. UK and US security forces refused to comment.

On August 1st this year, thanks to a court case they took in a federal court in Texas, the US-based Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) received newly unsealed documents relating to the seizures. Despite this, some serious questions remain. No mention of a gagging order for example.

For the rest of the story, the outstanding question and the documents themselves go to San Fransisco Indymedia at: http://www.indybay.org/news/2005/08/1757335.php ... read full story / add a comment

Noel Dempsey today welcomed Rio Tinto's 'donation' to the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI).

This is the same Minister that yesterday granted permission for Shell, Statoil and Marathon to begin offshore work on a major gas field despite recent illegal construction work.

Demspey appears to be championing the role of multinational corporations in Ireland despite the wishes and rights of Irish citizens.

One can only wonder where Rio Tinto are going to come into all of this? ... read full story / add a comment

Last week in a U.S. military court, Sgt. Kevin Benderman was sentenced to 15 months for refusing redeployment to Iraq.

Benderman had previously been deployed to Iraq for 8 months before concluding the U.S. war on Iraq to be immoral and illegal.

As nonviolent resistance to this war grows, there will be a growing number of brothers and sisters facing the courts & court martial, in brigs and prisons.

An inability to read or write may not conform to some people’s idea of a disability but whatever your view about that, few would disagree that it is a very disabling circumstance to live with. In speaking to Bernadette Collins who manages the North West Cork Adult Basic Education Service, what is shocking to hear is that by the age of just 14 or 15 many people have decided that it is already too late. What follows is a life full of serious inconveniences and problems, compounded by deep-seated feelings of embarrassment – or even shame - about not being able to read or write. ... read full story / add a comment
