Iggy Madden of Iggy Madden Haulage Ltd, Galway, crony, “close friend and confidante,” whatever, of shady Frank Fahey, was the target of Galway Shell to Sea’s concern this afternoon on account of the imminent removal by his firm of some 660,000 metric tonnes of blanket bog from Shell’s proposed gas refinery in Bellanaboy and dumped in a Bord Na Mona cutaway bog in Bangor Erris despite serious ecological concerns for such a venture. As karma or serendipity would have it, the great man himself was to hand when 13 Shell to Sea activists, prior to a picketing of his depot, were handing in a letter of protest to his docklands offices. Instead of hearing our plaints with a fair ear we were verbally abused, instead, and subjected to diplomacy of the bar room, redneck, kind ; “I’ll shove yer camera up yer arse” "Do ya have a job" etc, etc. So it goes. ... read full story / add a comment

Members of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign manned stalls in Galway and Limerick on Saturday to highlight the clandestine trade in Israeli diamonds. Irish consumers are unaware that most of the diamonds sold in Ireland are crafted in Apartheid Israel, the worlds leading exporter of cut/polished diamonds. This year gemstone exports from Apartheid Israel are expected to approximate $18-$20 billion or more than 150% of Apartheid Israel’s $12 billion military budget for 2007. Diamond exports comprise 30% of Apartheid Israel’s total manufacturing exports and are the backbone of the apartheid regime’s economy. Consumers need to be made aware that when they purchase diamonds they are likely to be supporting the illegal occupation and brutal subjugation of the Palestinian people. ... read full story / add a comment

Protesters from Dublin Shell to Sea managed to evade the heavy security at the Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis this morning. A number of activists held a protest at the main door of the Ard Fheis venue inside the City West complex. A banner was unfurled and one protester spoke to conference delegates through a megaphone, pointing out that the people of Ireland were being forced by the government to watch as their natural resources were handed over to Shell and Statoil, with nothing coming back, while the people of Erris have to put up with the severe degradation of their environment and unacceptable risks to their lives. The protesters, some of whom were wearing masks of Bertie Ahern and Noel Dempsey, were soon surrounded by Gardaí and security guards. ... read full story / add a comment

In Rathmines, Harold's Cross and Crumlin we are to lose St Luke's Hospital. In fact, the hospital scandal stretches further than that. We are to lose a cancer hospital which will be amalgamated with St James, the high property values allowed Minster Mc Dowell's Sidekick to sign the lands to speculators. There is a clinic in that hospital complex used by the parents of kids with CF and asthma called Lukedoc/Dubdoc- one TD from the area put down the question re losing our clinic published below is the reply from Mary Harney. ... read full story / add a comment

The Irish department of Foreign Affairs has instructed our South African ambassador to go to Harare and make known Our State's displeasure at the arresting, beating up and murder of MDC activists and opposition. It would be a fine day if they did the same with the US ambassador, but thats a whole other story, not to mention the one year long attempt by the EU to elicit response from Dermot on Rendition. We do not have an ambassador to Zimbabwe. The twist is this. : http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2007/03/365913.html and this:- http://www.newzimbabwe.com/pages/sadc9.16165.html and Tony Blair is rubbing up to the issue too: http://news.independent.co.uk/world/africa/article2383905 ... read full story / add a comment

Poland ought be at the top of the agenda of any politically clued in European BGLT activist or anyone (such as myself) who merely supports their rights. Last week the deputy minister of education in the quite frankly weirdest administration in the EU anounced a new bill which will prohibit any person of declared homosexuality or any person who supports "homosexuality" from teaching in either schools or universities. the Polish government has officially suggested & proposed legislation for employment descrimination on grounds of sexual orientation & moreover - proposed legislation which strips citizens of their right to free-expression ... read full story / add a comment

It seems now that arch stickie Sean Garland will now escape extradition after all. You might recall that he had to flee the 6 counties not so long ago to avoid the PSNI\RUC extraditing him to America to face allegations of forging US bank notes in collusion with N.Korea. This is a result of the latest tete a tete between N.Korea and the US. In attempts to encourage the process it seems the yanks have agreed to overlook the whole forgery affair and thus it seems to be that Garland wont be donning an orange boiler suit with matching ear muffs anytime soon, and mores the pity in many peoples opinion (see a recent thread here on Indymedia on Garlands threatened extradition, if anyone has the link can they post it as I cant find it). ... read full story / add a comment
