offsite link Dictator Trump? That?s Just Silly Wed Feb 26, 2025 19:05 | Dr James Allan
Calling Trump a dictator is just silly, says Prof James Allan. Yes, he's bombastic. But he's been elected to secure the border and drain the swamp. And he is the President, in whom all executive authority resides.

Classroom assistants across Northern Ireland are preparing for industrial action to defend their pay.

Their employers, the Education and Library Boards acting under the direction of Education Minister Catriona Ruane, are proposing to cut their pay by as much as 79p an hour. The insulting move comes at the end of years of negotiation by the main trade unions representing Classroom Assistants, NIPSA and UNISON.

On Thur 3rd May 2007 at Westport District Court, I successfully applied for summonses and initiated prosecutions against 3 members of An Garda Síochána, Belmullet, Co Mayo, who were then summonsed to appear to answer charges of assault, criminal damage and theft at Belmullet District Court on 13th June.

On Wed 13th June 2007 at Belmullet District Court, I failed to bring the case to a full hearing, because of a number of avoidable mistakes that I made, one of which proved to my undoing, whereby the judge put a stop to me proceeding any further with these summonses.

This article is an account of my days in court, including the procedures I went through to initiate the prosecutions and the mistakes I made in failing, at this stage, to bring the proceedings to the proper conclusion of a trial. I hope others can learn from my experience, avoid the pitfalls, and be encouraged to bring their own prosecutions against criminal Gardaí, in order to stop their violence and the cowardly abuse of their power. ... read full story / add a comment

A couple of months ago the story of Thomas Kennedy's unlawful imprisonment was carried on Indymedia. In the meantime he remains in prison being periodically brought back to Judge Olive Buttimers Court. He believes he is unjustly imprisoned and Judge Buttimer states she will keep him in prison until he changes his mind. Justice, the Kennedy family and the tax payer is the loser in Olive Buttimers merry-go-round. This is todays episode. ... read full story / add a comment

On the 24th of June 2006, at least four policemen tortured two migrants in the police station of Omonia in central Athens. They forced them to beat each other, beat them both and captured the torturing on a mobile phone camera. For nearly a year, that footage was circulated amongst policemen via mobile phones. On the early hours of the 16th of June 2007 the video was uploaded to a commercial video sharing service and from there, to Athens Indymedia. A few hours later it featured as breaking news in Greece's major media outlets, forcing prime minister Karamanlis to issue a statement condemning the incident. ... read full story / add a comment

The new government is set to continue the old policies; underfunding healthcare and creating a US-style, for-profit health system. This will only worsen the crisis and must be resisted. The current scandal here in Limerick of people having to travel long distances for dialysis underlines this.

For years now the government and HSE have been aware that the dialysis machine in Limerick Regional Hospital is over worked and that one or more new macines are desperately needed. They refused to act, putting costs before service. Now people are forced to travel to Tullamore, Kilkenny or Tralee a few times a week to recieve vital dialysis.

One year on and 6 of the 8 Sudanese men who went on hunger strike in Sweden last summer (http://www.indymedia.ie/article/76869 ), have been granted asylum. One of them got full asylum granted by the migration court. The other five each got one year temporary asylum in order to give them time to prove their identities to the migration board. If they do this they will be granted full asylum next year. The seventh man, who was initially turned down, will have his case heard again due to a procedural flaw in his original application process. The eighth man is still waiting for a decision from the migration board. A ninth Sudanese asylum seeker, who did not hunger strike, has had his application rejected in court. His support group are now applying to the supreme migration court to have the case re-examined. ... read full story / add a comment
