Governments, campaigners and survivors of cluster bombs from around the world are meeting in New Zealand this week to decide what a treaty banning cluster bombs will include. It is the most significant disarmament conference the New Zealand government has ever hosted and will result in a draft treaty text that countries will agree to negotiate in Dublin, from 19-30 May 2008. Some governments are trying to weaken a treaty by calling for exemptions based on dubious technical fixes. The Cluster Munition Coalition (CMC) are calling for the strongest possible ban on cluster bombs. ... read full story / add a comment

Yesterday, Galway IPSC took to the street to protest against the collusion of a spineless and conscienceless EU with Israel and to encourage shoppers to boycott Israeli goods.

Belfast based, David Morrison, who writes for the Labour & Trade Union Review puts the pertinent question in a Electronic Intifada article: "How is Israel able to strangle the Gaza Strip when there is supposed to be an international crossing between Gaza and Egypt not controlled by Israelis?" and then goes on to answer with telling detail that: "It was primarily through the good offices of the European Union (EU), which had a formal role in managing the Rafah crossing, that Israel always had a veto on the opening of the crossing. In practice, whenever Israel didn't want the crossing open, the EU obligingly kept it shut". http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article9303.shtml

Donegal group MAOR have expressed concern at Shell and Statoil's plans to carry out exploratory drilling off the Donegal Coast. From March 2008, Shell plan to conduct exploratory drilling off the North West coast of Donegal (Gaoth Dobhair, Tory Island), while Statoil intend to carry out drilling off the South West Donegal Coast (Glencolumbcille & Killybegs) from April. MAOR state that Donegal, indeed Ireland, is set to lose billions of euros worth of resources while facing similar environmental, health and safety issues as the community in Rossport, Co. Mayo. MAOR claim that the people of Ireland have had no say as to how their natural resources are being used and a referendum is urgently needed before more of Ireland's natural resources are given away. ... read full story / add a comment

before he was first interned in a British prison over 6 years ago; must
