Garda says that lots of people find anti-war banners offensive, and is looking for the least excuse to have them removed. Whatever about his illegitemate and unprofessional power-hungry bullying, this garda must have turned off his critical faculties regarding the offensive nature of illegal invasions and one million Iraqi dead. It seems the Irish state police would rather banish factual posters in a temporary vigil, than investigate what's on CIA and US Army flights going through Shannon Airport. ... read full story / add a comment

Public hospitals around the country scheduled to close under current Government plans have been named in the run up to a major health rally in Monaghan on Saturday, May 10th. These closures will lead to an American-style health system where access to medical treatment, including hospital emergency care, depends on ability to pay, warned Marie O’Connor Health Services Action Group PRO. If Monaghan General closes, HSE will press on to terminate over 40 other public hospitals, said Monaghan Community Alliance Chairperson Peadar McMahon. ‘Many are already marked DNR –– do not resuscitate.’ Speakers at the Monaghan rally include Joe Higgins of the Campaign for a Real Public Health Service, former MEP Patricia McKenna, Dr Illona Duffy, Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson and local TD, Caoimhghín O'Caoláin and Peadar McMahon, Chairperson of the Monaghan Community Alliance. ... read full story / add a comment

Ireland’s charities will require additional financial and infrastructural support from Government to help them prepare for new regulatory requirements set out in the Charities Bill 2007, a conference was told on Thursday. Delegates from a cross-section of charities put their position in relation to the bill, which is currently being passed through the Dáil, to the Minister of State in the Department of Community, Rural, and Gaeltacht Affairs, Pat Carey TD, at a national conference organised by The Wheel, a leading support and representative network for the community and voluntary sector in Ireland. ... read full story / add a comment

Indymedia Antwerp and one of its contributors are being sued by a local business man for damages of 10,000 euro each hour an article is online. The article is a translation of a petition to stop big game elephant hunting. Indymedia Antwerp has been calling for solidarity to other groups on the global network. ndymedia Antwerpen is an undepended newssite which is supported by only volunteer work. On our newsite there is no censure without strong motivation. Within the theme of the site everyone can write what he or she likes. Except when readers ask articles become hidden or slightly modified. This is our conviction and we will change it for no reason, especially not because of a bad past post-colonial hunting adventure. ... read full story / add a comment

RUC-PSNI nail their colours to the mast 03/05/08 An éirígí initiative to mark the 92nd anniversary of the Easter Rising has come under both verbal and physical attack in an area of the Six Counties notorious for sectarian discrimination against the nationalist community. While the distribution of thousands of copies of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic and other éirígí commemorative events were well received in Belfast, Dublin, the Donegal Gaeltacht and north Munster, the response from some in the south Derry area has been nothing short of vitriolic. ... read full story / add a comment

This year the Iranian government's repression of workers has started before the 1st of May with the arrest of a number of labour activists in the last week of April . Two of the leading members of the newly found 'Free union of Iranian workers' ( who despite its unfortunate choice of name has declared its intentions to work within the confines of the current regime and avoid 'political' opposition to the regime) were arrested ahead of plans for a May Day demonstration in Kurdistan. The government followed the arrests by banning unofficial May Day celebrations in various parks in Tehran. ... read full story / add a comment

Fuel and medical shortages, unbridled Israeli military attacks, trade embargoes, travel restrictions and now the food crisis has brought Gaza to the edge of an all out humanitarian crisis: out of a population of 1.4 million, the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), last Thursday, due to the Israeli fuel blockade has halted food aid to 700,000 refugees and the World Food Programme to another 127,000. Michael Jansen in last Friday's Irish Times http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/breaking/2008/0306/bre....html states that: "Due to the grounding of its vehicles, UNRWA also reduced operations at 214 schools serving 200,000 children and 19 health centres as well as refuse collection in eight refugee camps housing 500,000" ... read full story / add a comment
