St Patrick's flag flutters in front of Limavady Orange Hall, Co Derry

This morning, the St Patrick's flag flutters in front of Limavady Orange hall in Co. Derry. The Irish flag of St Patrick, not often seen even in northern Irish Unionist districts, is a diagonal red cross against a white background. When combined with the English Cross of St George (a red cross against a white background, often seen at English football matches and on nationalist rallies in Georgia in eastern Europe) and the Scottish Cross of St Andrew (a diagonal white cross against a blue background) you get the British Union Flag, known colloquially as the "Union Jack". ... read full story / add a comment

Five years on from the invasion of Iraq by the US people still are taking to the street to say 'Not in Our name'.

The Irish Anti-war Movement along with PANA and millions of people all over the world joined together to say no to an imperial war, phoney arguments and greed for oil. Rain falls in Dublin while bombs, destruction and devastation rains down on Iraq. Another world is possible. ... read full story / add a comment

Have heard from two reliable sources that Squeek has left the tunnel at Rath Lugh. She left with Gardai and some of her family present. The Gardai have taken her away from the site as far as I am aware.

Here's hoping for 100 to take her place. Tara is THE symbol of dead-end corruption and anti-democratic government in Ireland. The dictatorship of the developers. Pitting people against each other.

Well done Squeek. Takes a lot of nerve. ... read full story / add a comment

Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty yesterday met with representatives of Shell and Statoil to clearly outline his and Sinn Féin’s opposition to the terms and conditions under which gas exploration companies operate in Ireland and in Irish Waters.

Speaking after the meeting Senator Doherty said, “Today I met with representatives of Shell and Statoil to clearly outline my and Sinn Féin’s complete opposition to the terms and conditions under which gas exploration companies operate in Ireland and in Irish Waters. These conditions have not been properly negotiated by the Government and do not offer a fair return to the State and its people. This is one of the reasons why Sinn Féin opposes the Finance Bill 2008 as it maintains these very conditions for gas exploration companies.

Since Michael McDowell changed the law to impose strict penalties on members of the Garda Siochána who talk to journalists, there has not been any legal way for members to report malpractice, except through using internal channels. Experience has shown that the gardaí can be extremely unsupportive of those who seek to draw attention to failings of their colleagues.

While some people have expressed disbelief at whether a political appointee can be be truly trusted to be independent of political influence, those who can remember the evidence heard in a case in the High Court in 2006 have wondered whether the particular person chosen will be able to inspire confidence in the rank and file gardaí. ... read full story / add a comment

The giveaway of Ireland's natural gas is a far greater corruption than anything the Mahon Tribunal is likely to uncover, according to Patricia McKenna of the Green Party. The former MEP was also critical of her Green Party colleague, Minister Eamon Ryan. She is speaking at a public meeting in Dublin this Thursday, March 13th at 7pm at the ATGWU Hall in Middle Abbey St, organised by the Dublin Shell to Sea campaign. Last Wednesday 5 March, Sheena Campbell Ogra Shinn Fein hosted the opening event to remember the 20th anniversary of the Gibraltar 3, at Queens University Belfast.

It began with a black flag vigil outside the university front gates for 30 minutes as a mark of respect to those killed in Gibraltar and Milltown.

Following the vigil there was a talk and a showing of a film in Queens University.
