Last Wednesday 5 March, Sheena Campbell Ogra Shinn Fein hosted the opening event to remember the 20th anniversary of the Gibraltar 3, at Queens University Belfast.

It began with a black flag vigil outside the university front gates for 30 minutes as a mark of respect to those killed in Gibraltar and Milltown.

Following the vigil there was a talk and a showing of a film in Queens University.

The speakers at the event were Seamus Finucane, partner of Mairead Farrell when she was tragically killed, Jennifer McCann MLA, who was a close comrade of Mairead having been imprisoned with her in Armagh Gaol, she was also a close friend of Dan McCann, and West Tyrone MLA Barry McElduff who was a student at Queens, at the time of the Gibraltar 3’s death.

Ogra activist Eunan Carlin, chaired proceedings.

How is the author of the best selling book about the death of the crew of a fishing boat connected to the high prices for petrol being paid by Irish motorists?

It's said that Sebastian Junger, author of the bestseller The Perfect Storm, had his life saved by a Henry Okah, who is currently in jail somewhere in Nigeria, facing trial on a charge of treason. The deteriorating security situation in Nigeria, of which Okah's incarceration is a part, is contributing the rising world price of oil. ... read full story / add a comment

3 exit polls in the Spanish state concur that Zapatero has won the General Election in that state with an absolute majority of both votes cast & seats won.

Over the Pyrennes in the French state, the electorate had its first opportunity to chastise Sarkozy, which exit polls appear to suggest has seen the left win 47% to a right wing 40%.

In addition the Spanish PSOE or socialist party has won the autonomous elections for the Andalucian parliament. It appears the Spanish like liberal modernity even if the onions cost a lot & are prepared to continue with the Zapatero project for another four years. ... read full story / add a comment

There was a bomb attack on a United States military target, an army recruitment office, in New York City this morning.

At about 9AM Irish time (4AM in New York) an explosive device was detonated at the office in Manhattan.

The incident is reminiscent of IRA attacks on British army recruitment offices. In May 1990, for example, a British soldier was killed when a bomb exploded at an office in Wembley in London, and many other attacks were mounted against such places over the course of the conflict.

Politics.ie, the popular internet discussion chat board, has been taken offline in what is said to be a serious hacking incident. Users of the site complained that personal information and private messages had been hacked into earlier this week, and some also complained that their avatars (the colourful flag or party emblem they use to indentify each other) had been changed without their permission.

Yesterday at lunchtime the site stopped loading onto users' computers, with all requests timing out. People have speculated that productivity in certain government departments has since shot up. ... read full story / add a comment

Yesterday, another four exploration licences were awarded to energy companies who want to exploit the natural resources off the west coast of Ireland. Estimates of the value of our resources vary, but the rising price of energy around the world would indicate that large amounts of money are at stake. The Department of Natural Resources released figures last May saying that there are at least 10 billion barrels of oil in Irish waters. There may be much more. Oil is currently valued at $104 per barrel. ... read full story / add a comment

"On an eight day intercultural, fact-finding trip to Palestine," http://www.indymedia.ie/article/86470 and participating in the weekly Bil'in protest last Friday, three IPSC activists in a group of ten Irish concerned citizens who journey up from Jerusalem witnessed the brutal dispersal of the peaceful marchers by the Israeli Occupation Forces through the indiscriminate firing of rubber bullets and physical assault which continued all around us as our group was corralled without rhyme, reason or explanation by the IOF. Even so, thanking the good lord for small mercies, it was small potatoes in comparison to the egregious violence visited on previous Bil'in protests as evidenced in the DVD documentary we saw later. ... read full story / add a comment
