During the current Lisbon referendum campaign, numerous politicians, business and think-tank leaders and spokespersons have repeatedly asserted that EU Member States, including Ireland, have a veto on whether or not the EU signs up to a WTO free-trade deal on agricultural goods. This is not true. An international free-trade agreement that consists exclusively of agricultural and other ‘manufactured’ goods, cannot be vetoed. It can only be decided on by a ‘qualified majority’ vote by the EU Council of Ministers. Additionally, the automatic veto on free-trade agreements in essential public services, which Member States currently enjoy, is removed under the proposed Lisbon treaty, reports Barry Finnegan.* ... read full story / add a comment

“Rodent and bird Glue traps are an extremely cruel method of killing animals.
we believe that if people knew the degree of cruelty associated with these devices they would want no part of them.
The are illegal under the wildlife act (approved traps, snares and nets) regulations 2003.
However the sale or possession of these traps will have to be monitored to eradicate them completely.
So far Atlantic,Swords and Murtaghs Co Meath , among other rural stores have removed them immediately when told by us that they were illegal. We appreciate their cooperation.-most are imported and they are also openly for sale still on the internet .AFAR members will be reporting all shops selling them .

Since being told by the Intelligence Ministry in Bushehr on 12 May that Javanmir Moradi and Taha Azadi have been transferred to the Intelligence Ministry in Kermanshah, their families’ attempts to find out where they are being held have been fruitless.

On 18 May Fouzieh Khalesi [Moradi’s wife] approached the Intelligence Ministry she was violently attacked by Ministry officers who tried to arrest her. This was resisted by those accompanying her, which resulted in Fouzieh getting an injured leg. Several of those with her were beaten with rifle butts. ... read full story / add a comment

This morning in Castlebar, the judge in the case involving three local fishermen who were appealing against prison sentences imposed on them, suddenly announced that he was excusing himself from making a judgment.

Judge Rory McCabe told the court that he has a personal conflict in dealing with the case and would not be able to hear it. He declined to say what the nature of this conflict is. He said he would try to make alternative arrangements for another judge to hear the case later this week. The judge in the original case, Mary Devins has been criticised because she insists she has no conflict in hearing case relating to the government backed-Shell scheme even though she is married to a Fianna Fail minister, Jimmy Devins. ... read full story / add a comment

Dutch minister Hirsch Ballin wants txt, telephone conversations and emails that people send in the Netherlands and from and to the Netherlands to be kept for 18 months on file instead of the 6 months it is currently kept for. The law on the protection of privacy is outweighed by the need for protection of the state they conclude. The new European law states that the states will have to keep the conversations on file for more than lf a year. Another reason to vote no to the treaty. ... read full story / add a comment

The replacement of Bertie "Liar Liar Pants On Fire" Ahern with Brian "Biffo" Cowen has led to a boost in popular support for Fianna Fail.
Sinn Fein the only party who are opposed to the Lisbon Treaty show a worrying decrease in support.
Brian Cowen has come out fighting in the last week trying to persuade the electorate to vote in favour of the Treaty after recent polls showed poor levels of support.
Is Cowen likely to change the opinions of the electorate by transfering a boost in support into support for Lisbon.

Speaking at the graves of the leaders of the Easter Rising on Saturday (May 10), éirígí chairperson Brian Leeson called for an honest assessment of the state of radical politics in modern-day Ireland.

“Radical, revolutionary, separatist, republicanism is far weaker now than what it was a decade ago – in both political and organisational terms," Leeson said.

"Acceptance of this fact is the first necessary step in the process of reorganising and re-building a diverse social movement for the combined objectives of British withdrawal and social and economic justice." ... read full story / add a comment
