Please help AFAR expose those selling or using banned glue traps

category national | animal rights | news report author Friday May 23, 2008 13:47author by Bernie Wright - Alliance for Animal Rightsauthor email allianceforanimalrights at gmail dot comauthor address AFAR,PO Box 4734. Dublin.1 ireland. Report this post to the editors

Rodent Glue traps openly on sale despite being illegal

“Rodent and bird Glue traps are an extremely cruel method of killing animals.
we believe that if people knew the degree of cruelty associated with these devices they would want no part of them.
The are illegal under the wildlife act (approved traps, snares and nets) regulations 2003.
However the sale or possession of these traps will have to be monitored to eradicate them completely.
So far Atlantic,Swords and Murtaghs Co Meath , among other rural stores have removed them immediately when told by us that they were illegal. We appreciate their cooperation.-most are imported and they are also openly for sale still on the internet .AFAR members will be reporting all shops selling them .

There has been a few court cases involving the illegal possession of GTs In 2005 a substantial number were seized at Dublin port , the dept of the environment arranged the recall and destruction of these traps. “

The use of glue traps dates back to at least 1832, when a sticky device was developed to capture birds. Since then, glue or adhesive traps have been used to trap a variety of animals, and they are now common methods of mouse and rat control.(1) Sticky glue traps cause the animals they catch an enormous amount of suffering and a traumatic death. Humane methods of rodent control are available.
What Is a Glue Trap?
A glue trap consists of a piece of cardboard, fiberboard, or plastic that is coated with a sticky adhesive. Sticky traps are designed for indoor use, since outside they can become clogged with leaves and other loose material. Glue trap makers generally state that trapped animals should be thrown away along with the trap. Thus, animals suffer alive in the trap for days. most are produced in the Uk.
Humane or Horrible?
A 1983 test that evaluated the effectiveness of glue traps found that trapped mice struggling to free themselves would pull out their own hair, exposing bare, raw areas of skin. The mice broke or even bit off their own legs, and the glue caused their eyes to become badly irritated and scarred. After three to five hours in the glue traps, the mice defecated and urinated heavily because of their severe stress and fear, and quickly became covered with their own excrement.(2) Animals whose faces become stuck in the glue slowly suffocate, and all trapped animals are subject to starvation and dehydration.
Please use Solutions Without Suffering
The problem of rodent infestation is largely preventable by maintaining clean, sanitary conditions and plugging holes or cracks where mice or rats might enter a building. If traps are needed to remove mice or rats, humane box-type traps are available. These traps are a box-like plastic or cage-like metal with a spring-release trap door at one end that closes behind the animal once he or she enters the trap. The trap can then be taken outdoors where the animal can be released. When using these, be sure to check them every few hours, as frightened rodents, with their high rate of metabolism, quickly become thirsty and hungry.
Despite the stereotypes of "dirty" or "diseased" mice and rats, it is seldom warranted to kill bothersome rodents. The use of poisons can result in the painful deaths of cats, dogs, and other animals who either ingest the poison by mistake or eat the bodies of poisoned rodents. Natural repellents or nonlethal traps are the only truly humane methods of rodent control.

Glue traps are horrendous; it's kinder to use a spring-trap or a cat to keep rodents down/away.

Are they banned throughout the EEC, or just in Ireland?

These traps are truly horrific.

Cats are the best natural repellent in my experience. Mice and rats rarely enter a home where ther is a resident feline, and even if they pop in, the soon leave as soon as they get a whiff of a cat!

My aunt's apartment block was recently infested with rats. Her apartment (which she shares with her husband and 3 cats) was the only one which remained rat-free. The neighbours soon started "borrowing" her cats for a few hours, enlisting their services to repell the rodents.

On another note my father had a resident mouse family in his house for a while. He started leaving food out for them every night, and they lived happily, leaving his food alone. He didn't catch the plague either....

A few well fed cats (more likely to hunt for recreational purposes when not hungry) around the house will keep rodents at bay.

Poison kills animals in a horrific way too, slowly turning their insides to mush. I have had dogs die from rat poison in the past, and cats breaking their paws in traditional mouse traps. Neither are necessary. Rodents will always be around but if there is a cat in the house they are highly unlikely to move in.

I read your article on glue traps.

One person said that a clean house will not have mice. Really? They need shelter and water which even the cleanest of houses will have. They also are happy to eat paper which even the cleanest of houses will have. Also, very clean houses have bread in paper or plastic containers and the mice are very capable of breaking into them to get the bread.

Some people suggest cats, but if you are a mice lover, you would be horrified if you watched the long ritual of cats and their mice.

Until people have better solutions, I will use glue traps

"Until people have better solutions, I will use glue traps"

anything is better than glue

with glue traps the animal spends days stuck. in agony with no food or water
and in a panic
anything is better than that.
hence they are illegal

By "something better" I mean something that gets the mice out of the house better.

I have used cats (which by the way if it is all about making mike happy would be the worst method), poison (which I hate to do because the poison could end up in the soil), live catch, and spring.

I have caught plenty with glue traps and the mice were doing just fine when I found them. I think your stories of torture (which the cats really do) is just something you heard. If a person wanted, they could easily release the mice from the glue traps to go on and live a happy life.

Mice in the house destroy important things including wiring and make us sick.

"If a person wanted, they could easily release the mice from the glue traps to go on and live a happy life." Most don't want to.

These traps ar illegal. In this country for something to be mad illegal s a big big deal.

They are horrific. Yes, so is the way cats "play" with mice, but that is nature. My cats don't hunt, generally. when they do, I save the animal hunted. It is very rare thankfully.

However, to trap an animal, a wild animal, with glue is, I feel, far worse than having its natural predator kill him or her. When a cat catches a mouse, the mouse does not resort to chewing off its own leg, for example.

trapman.com do a great line in humane trapa of all sizes. Mouse and rat sizes are on sale at Woodies. If you plan to release them unharmed, get a trap that won't hurt them! If you want to deterr them. get a cat. They will not come in to your home if there is a cat there.....
