These are hard times for the Basque Country. We know that we will resist as we owe this to our children. We are ready. 50 years of modern struggle. We resisted Franco as well as all Spanish governments from left to right. They all got bog down with the Basque Country and it will continue until the French and Spanish authorities recognise the reality and the rights of our country. We are calling on international solidarity to mobilise (International Solidarity Week with the Basque Country, February 18-24), to denounce the denial of political and social rights, so that our country can build democratically a sovereign, proud and socialist society. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

The audience in Holy Trinity Heritage Centre, Carlingford, yesterday contributed to immensely to a finely wrought performance by Ensemble Avalon. There was no attention deficit and no disconcerting applause at the end of individual movements. Applause was reserved for the end of each of the four sonatas performed. In a very symmetrical program each of the sonatas had three movements. There was no rocking in the aisles but the applause was appreciative and there was a general air of satisfaction around the Heritge Centre as the performance progressed. The cost of a ticket for this concert was €15. ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

Belfast Anarchist Black Cross held a small picket outside Maghaberry prison on Saturday the 2th February to raise awareness of the ongoing prison abuses and neglect of prisoners as well as leafleting families outside the gates to build solidarity and support. We were also paid a nice visit by the local pigs, no doubt at the behest of the screws that were wary of our presence. Belfast ABC will continue to picket Maghaberry and other prisons in the future and provide a forum for prisoners and their families to raise their grievances. You are not alone! ... read full story / add a comment ![]()

Approximately 200 people packed into Wynns Hotel, Dublin, on 29 January, to attend a meeting hosted by the Socialist Party on the issue of the health crisis in Ireland. The meeting was organised to discuss the health crisis and to raise the demand for “a public health service for all”. The meeting was addressed by two hospital consultants, Professor John Crown and Dr. Orla Hardiman, a nurse, Triona Murphy, and by former Socialist Party TD [member of Irish parliament] Joe Higgins. Professor Crown has won a very high profile in the media over the last year for making significant public criticisms about the neo–liberal agenda of the government for the health service. All the platform speakers graphically outlined the real crisis facing patients and workers in the health service. Many other health workers and representatives of campaigns spoke form the floor. ... read full story / add a comment
