Sometimes politicians have to lose to win so the other side can show its true colours. Trump is the standout example, says Prof James Allan. Had he won in 2020, we would not have had the blitz of the last four weeks.

A photo-review of WSM activities in Munster cities during the Lisbon referendum campaign. The Cork WSM branch, with the help of other comrades from Limerick and Dublin, did 4 info stalls on the streets of Cork, Limerick and Waterford as part of our campaign activities. Each was blessed with good sunny weather and a public mood in some sympathy with our anarchist vote No message. We gave out thousands of leaflets, and made new contacts across the cities. It was also good to see what other campaigns were active on the ground across Munster. ... read full story / add a comment

The Department of Agriculture is currently drafting legislation to update the Animal Welfare Bill, which will be brought to the Government for approval in the coming months.

Although the summary draft of the bill focuses primarily on aspects of farming, such as the control and eradication of animal diseases, and the slaughter and disposal of animals/animal by-products, it also seeks to update the Protection of Animals Act 1911 on cruelty-related offences. It will also include provisions to deal with inspections for specified animals and the conditions in which they are kept (for example, pet shops). ... read full story / add a comment

"How do you recognise a ghost? By the fact that it does not recognise itself in a mirror.

Since all of a sudden [the mirror] no longer plays its role, since it does not reflect back the expected image, those who are looking for themselves can no longer find themselves in it. Men no longer recognise in it the social character of their own labour. It is as if they were becoming ghosts in their turn.

These ghosts that are commodities transform human producers into ghosts. And this whole theatrical process (visual, theoretical, but also optical, optician) sets off the effect of a mysterious mirror."

On Sunday afternoon, a group of anti-war and human rights campaigners walked the 15 miles from the historic Treaty Stone in Limerick to Shannon airport, scene of Ireland’s complicity in war and torture. There they joined members of Amnesty International, Coisantoiri Siochana and others who had come to attend the monthly Shannon vigil. The vigil was, as always, a peaceful remembrance of all who have died, disappeared or been tortured as a result of the senseless “war on terror”. It was also a reminder to our Irish public representatives that their failure to question US military and CIA use of the airport is shameful and intolerable. ... read full story / add a comment

On Saturday 17th May, members of the National Animal Rights Association organised a demonstration outside the Pearl Brasserie restaurant. This was in protest of the fact that they serve foie gras, a so-called 'delicacy' that is produced so barbarically, it is illegal to farm ducks and geese for it in Ireland. Within minutes of the protest starting, activists were hosed by members of staff, and threatened by the owner (which resulted in the Gardai having to be called).

Undeterred by what happened, activists returned to the Pearl Brasserie, on Saturday 31st May. It was a very visual and effective protest, which went by without incident.

A short video clip was taken, which includes footage of the owner of the restaurant, Sebastien Masi (the one who threatened us), recording us with a video-camera. Have a look!

Also, below are some facts on foie gras, for anyone who isn't familiar with the issue. ... read full story / add a comment

The world is now more than ever suffering the effects of the liberalisation of markets and the consequences of Structural Adjustment Programmes implemented in the Global South in the 1970s and 80s. One of the most telling episodes in the history of this process has been the effect of liberalisation on food production and consumption. In the context of the current "food crisis", world leaders met in Rome last week at the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the UN to debate their responses. ... read full story / add a comment

Following the theft and damage of Lisbon Campaign for Middle East Justice and Peace signs in Dublin, Cork and Limerick, Galway on Friday night had a visitation of similiar malovolence when two large signs were torn from their anchorages, sliced into pieces and, bizarrely, after the top sections containing the text; "Israel Killed 52 Palestinian Children" were razored off, whatever, and stolen, the remaining pieces were neatly arranged on the grass - the signs highlighted the fact that Israel killed 52 Palestinian children in the first 18 weeks of 2008 and yet the EU, true to its hypocritical colours, refuses to impose sanctions. ... read full story / add a comment

The Taoiseach Brian Cowen is to attend a rally today to steady the resolve of Dublin FF supporters in a last ditch effort to get them to support the Lisbon Treaty. The event will take place at 2PM at the National College of Ireland in the IFSC.

The last ditch rally is an echo of the same tactic which was carried out last year in thegeneral election the Sunday before polling day.

Sources in the NO campaign said they would make their presence felt at the rally, to protest against the militarisation of the EU, amongst many other issues. ... read full story / add a comment
