On 27th September a sleep in protest to highlight the plight of homeless people in Ireland was staged outside Leinster House. Up till then I had no idea of the extent of homelessness in Ireland or how little the state seems to care about people who are homeless. I wrote down my impression of the events that night. What follows is my account of the few hours I spent in solidarity with my fellow citizens who have no place to call home. The only way homelessness will end in Ireland or anywhere else is if the people decide to end it. ... read full story / add a comment

It has been exactly one year since the arrest on October 3 2004 of "Mikel Antza" (Mikel Albizu born 1961), a writer attributed with leading the organisation ETA since 1992, thought to be directly responsible for 120 deaths. He was arrested with his partner "anboto" (Soledad Iparagirre - born 1961) who is blamed for 14 deaths. They were detained in a villa at Salíes-de-Béarn with 17 other presumed members of ETA, a quantity of arms, 1,300 kilograms of explosive and two SAM7 rocket launchers (supplied by irish dissident republicans). This morning the succesors to that couple were arrested (also in France) along with a quantity of arms in the 6th joint operation between Spain and France aimed at the total disarticulation of the terrorist group. ... read full story / add a comment

Warren Mitofsky, founder-president of one of the two polling firms that conducted the exit polls in the US presidential elections of November 2004, has agreed to debate the likely cause of the significant discrepancies between the exit poll data, which predicted that John Kerry would win with a margin of 3% of the popular vote, and the final vote tallies, which returned George Bush to the White House with a margin of 2.5%. The debate will be sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Organizational Dynamics and Department of Political Science, and will take place at lunchtime in Logan Hall, 249 South 36th Street, Philadelphia, on 14 October. Proposed wording for 41.2.1 The State recognises caring work done within the home, often extending to the community, as a social and economic activity that produces social welfare and economic wealth, and entitles carers, starting with mothers, to economic and other support. The State also recognises that in rural areas caring work has included work on the land which has kept families and communities alive and strong despite poverty and emigration. Proposed wording 41.2.2 The State shall therefore ensure that carers, starting with mothers, are not obliged by economic necessity to engage in waged work which would increase their workload, and shall provide workers in the home with independent remuneration and pensions. ... read full story / add a comment

Almost since i came to live in Catalonia, people have spoken about their "estatut" the reform of the relationship between their local and historical government and that of the Spanish state established under the constitution agreed at the transition to democracy. & i've done my best to explain the background and contemporary issues to readers in Ireland, because for many reasons it ought interest them. Many previously would have thought constitutional issues in Spain stopped at the Basque.
