The demonstration will assemble at 7pm in Shannon Town Centre. Protestors will then march to the terminal building at Shannon Airport. On the possibility of the protestors being prevented from entering Shannon, Anti-War Ireland says: “For the guards to prevent a peaceful protest from going ahead would amount to a serious breach of our civil liberties, and would be unacceptable. It would also be ironic, given that Bush expects to be applauded by our government for supposedly restoring democracy and civil liberties to the people of Iraq at the very moment ours are being threatened. At this point in time, we have no reason to believe that the protest will be banned. Anti-War Ireland has written to An Garda Síochana to give notice of a peaceful demonstration, and to indicate the march route. The gardaí have not been in touch with us, so we can only assume that it’s all systems go.” ... read full story / add a comment

“Ask any child in Latin America what the difference is between German fascism in the 1930s and US fascism today, and they’ll tell you: they were never invaded by Germany.” American singer and activist David Rovics was characteristically uncompromising when he arrived in Dublin today for a short Irish tour which begins tonight (Monday) at the Cobblestone in Dublin. ... read full story / add a comment

Úachtarán na hEireann, Mary McAleese, has condemned recent racist incidents in Belfast. Speaking at an event in Belfast, she said that the Chinese community had honoured Ireland by choosing to make the Island their home, and condemned recent attacks on homes and businesses. The event, a breakthrough in community relations work in Belfast, was also attended by Belfast's new Lord Mayor, Tom Eakin, of the cross-community Alliance Party. Some felt that the event was somewhat undermined by the joke made by the President that if the Chinese hadn't brought their wonderful cuisine to Ireland her children would have died of starvation a long time ago. Despite this apparently patronising gaffe, the President was well received and the event was hailed as a success by all involved. ... read full story / add a comment |
