After the fall of Saddam's dictatorship, a wave of looting erupted in towns and cities across Iraq. The media was outraged, often more concerned about stolen property than the civilians wounded and murdered by the US invasion. It was proclaimed that Iraq was falling into "anarchy." This is unsurprising, if annoying, for anarchists. It is worthwhile to explain why the chaos in post-Saddam Iraq is not anarchy nor, in fact, a case against anarchism. ... read full story / add a comment

Comrades, On this, the 87th anniversary of the Irish Citizen Army marching into the streets of Dublin to set an example for the working class of Europe then engaged in fratricidal war against one another, to free Ireland of its long oppression and occupation, and to bring to birth an Irish Socialist Republic, I am proud to bring greetings from the comrades, supporters, and friends of the Irish Republican Socialist Movement in England, Scotland, Canada, the United States, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, New Zealand, and Australia. From around the world, your comrades join you in commemorating this important anniversary, the memory of the martyrs of the struggle for national liberation and socialism in Ireland, and a commitment to continue on for the liberation of the Irish nation and its working people. ... read full story / add a comment

Every week in Dublin a young man is attacked, beaten to within an inch of his life or stabbed to death. The media is blaming it on alcohol. This may be so. But what if it's rampant homophobia in which attackers use their being pissed as a cover to conceal their hatred of gay people? The guys who are beaten up won't admit they were cruising; the attackers won't admit they're homophobic thugs who were also cruising and the media is too scared to tackle the issue head on. No surprise there then. ... read full story / add a comment

15.04.2003 - In war-torn Saravena, a town of 30,000 in Arauca department in eastern Colombia, soldiers dressed as clowns befriend local children by offering them candy, rides on armored personnel carriers, and the use of the army's swimming pool in return for the opportunity to pummel them with pro-army and anti-rebel propaganda. Before the Global Women's Strike Community Picket could even commence today outside Mill St Garda Station in Galway, we were approached by a uniformed Garda who gave us the drill about what we could and couldn't do. Then he added 'I hope I won't have to use my baton on you'. This, apparently, was a 'joke' - he was the only one laughing. It was uttered in the presence of a ten year old boy. Does the vicious attack on women, children and men in Iraq embolden the Garda Siochana to make veiled threats to women and children in this country? ... read full story / add a comment
