Why no mention of the thugs who are attacking gay people?

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday April 16, 2003 22:10author by Curious Report this post to the editors

Every week in Dublin a young man is attacked, beaten to within an inch of his life or stabbed to death. The media is blaming it on alcohol. This may be so. But what if it's rampant homophobia in which attackers use their being pissed as a cover to conceal their hatred of gay people? The guys who are beaten up won't admit they were cruising; the attackers won't admit they're homophobic thugs who were also cruising and the media is too scared to tackle the issue head on. No surprise there then.

Thanks 'curious' for bringing this up. The marginalsiation of certain identities has been a part of the human race for a very long time. The culture in the western world (despite gimmicky laws) is very hostile to people on the grounds of homosexuality, bisexuality or transgenderism.
Even the 'movement' as a whole can be extremely biased as i have often encountered. At the ESF in Firenze, the group who wanted to do a conference on LGBTQ issues and globalisation found it extremely difficult due to general hostility shown to them. So even from this new alternative to neo-liberalism and conservative ideology we each need a radical shake up as individuals and start to ask questions about our own identities and the culture to which we belong.
More interestingly we can apply this marginalisation to issues of ethnicity, gender, class, sub-cultures etc.
The 'free-market' has imposed a new set of standards and culture on people globally. If you do not conform to the market then you simply do not belong. Gay males in particular probably have one of the most commodified lifestyles and any diversion from this results in further marginalisation.
I hope that a thorough recognition of the multiple identites that exist and the ever increasing diversity presence in the world is something that we all embody as we try to form a culture and world view based on equality, democracy and love. check out the Amnety Internatioanl LGBTQ section. www.amnesty.ie

Brian Willoughby was convicted last week of murdering a young man. He jumped on the guy's head as the blood flowed, shouting "die, you queer".

This would indicate the primary motive of the murder was indeed homophobia. The reports of the case suggested a Brian Willoughby had mental problems.

So what. He was a homophobic cunt. And there's more like him out there. How many beatings are we NOT hearing about? The supposedly 'straight' guys who enter cruising areas, then beat up the guy who one minute before was giving them oral pleasure?

As for 'get real'- ironic name. Why don't you take a look in the mirror and see if you can locate your morals, if you have any?

It's all very well to bleat on about Iraq (which is fast becoming a dead duck issue) while daily on our streets people are being attacked so viciously that they bleed in hospital beds, fighting for their lives.

And you say that's not a 'real' issue. Get real.

I agree curious that this is a serious issue, but Iraq is most definetly not a dead duck!

author by Phuq Heddpublication date Wed Apr 16, 2003 23:22author address author phone Report this post to the editors

It would be a good idea to try and pull together whatever information there is on this. I agree that there's a serious issue here and it's something that hasn't been raised enough.

Ireland is a deeply homophobic country and there hasn't been a lot of reporting of this. "Curious", if you could pull together references on this then it'd be worth doing.

I am not gay and I stand a good a chance as a gay person to be attacked on the street tonight.
So why should this be turned into a gay issue?
Do a study of the attacks that are taking place and u will see its men women and children being attacked with no regard to sexual orintation.

author by Jimpublication date Wed Apr 16, 2003 23:51author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Of course, the reason it becomes a gay issue is to do with the question of motive.

Motive, indeed, is subjective, but no less real for that.

Curious fuck right off, this is the biggest non story I've heard fucking heard.

"Everyday people may be being attacked, because possibly they're gay"

Gee could you just be any more vague?

Muppet.

No one is talking about it and the media is afraid to follow it.

Care to qualify ANYTHING in your demand.

If you think this is an issue fuck off and write it up, don't wander around indymedia complaining that the media may not be handling a story which you yourself admit may have nothing to it.

Christ idiot

Christ, don't misquoute me. I said this WAS happening and is NOT being reported.

You say 'wander round indymedia' as if I have no right to be here, as if I'm a trespasser on your hallowed ground. Get up the yard. I didn't realise indymedia was exclusively for white hetrosexuals. Silly me.

As a gay person who is worried when I walk the streets at night, I think I should be able to make my point.

Dublin is not a gay-friendly place. The rampant homophobia which stalks our streets is still there. It hasn't gone away you know.

Gay people are facing the risk of attacks not only from drunks but also from anti-gay fuckers.

Yes, attacks can happen to anyone.

But if you're gay, black or in any other way 'different', the likelyhood of beind beaten or stabbed increases still further.

I was interested to see what people's perspectives would be when I wrote the story.

I'm sorry that people like 'Christ' think this is a non-story. Maybe he'd feel differently if he were queer.

Ireland, up until the perhaps the last two decades has been highly intolerant of sexual diversity. Both the Church and State promoted and idealised the traditional model of the family condemning alternative lifestyles as both immoral and illegal (until 1997).

It's unresonable to suggest that centuries of sexual repression and the demonisation of homosexuals as "deviant" by both church and state will simply vanish within a few years of liberalism and economic good fortune.

Ireland, by international standards had, and still has one of the most backward attitudes to sexual activity in the world.

"You say 'wander round indymedia' as if I have no right to be here, as if I'm a trespasser on your hallowed ground. Get up the yard. I didn't realise indymedia was exclusively for white hetrosexuals. Silly me."

Where exactly did I say that.

I lambast you for being a idiot and your fucking idiotic non story (to wit "WHY ISN'T WRITING ABOUT SOMETHING THAT MIGHT NOT BE HAPPENING") and you launch into "WE'RE HERE WE'RE QUEER".

I really don't give a rats ass if you're gay/straight/stuff gerbils up your ass, my problem with you is your non story.

Don't post, Gay people might be beating up, why aren't you writing about it" Get off your fucking arse and write about it.

But you're aching to make an issue and stamp your foot about Gay rights. Which is what you really wanted to do in the first place.

I love the "Christ" bit. Would jesus have been so great if he was black.

I really don't give a fuck about what your deal is, what bothers me is you swanning around here and demanding that someone write a story about something you'd like to read about it.

Drag your ass onto the street and write the fucking story, and shut the fuck up.

You are such an arsehole

Oh dear, I think you need some man loving to sort out your agression problem!

What a Cunt.

I'm by no means a "we're here, we're queer" person. Not one bit.

Without repeating my main point AGAIN (since you so obviously are way too thick to accept even the POTENTIAL validity of other people's points), I have a message for you:

Just Fuck Off and sort out your own sexuality, (something with which you must have problems)

Reading the shite you've written has been a pain in the arse; there are better ways to get a pain in arse. You'll find that out sometime.
