About thirty people protested tonight at the Shell Oil Petrol Station in Blackpool, Cork to mark the anniversary of the Shell Oil sponsored execution of the Ogoni activist Ken Saro-Wiwa. The protest was called by Cork Shell To Sea to mark the ongoing resistant and bloody struggle by the Ogoni people in Nigeria against the Shell Oil Corporation. It also aimed to promote the link between the ongoing struggle against Shell Oil in Rossport in Mayo and the international activities of the Shell Corporation which in the case of the Ogoni lands has led to huge environmental damage, resource robbery and repression at Shell’s behest. Below is the text of the letter which representatives from Ogoni Solidarity Ireland, Afri and Shell to Sea sought to hand in to Shell's Headquarters at Corrib House today, November 10th. The letter was accompanied with a wreath in memory of Ken Saro Wiwa and the Ogoni Eight, who were executed 10 years ago today. in november 1995, nigerian writer and activist, ken saro-wiwa, and 8 of his colleagues were executed by the military regime for campaigning against the devastation of the niger delta by oil multi-national shell. yesterday, demonstrators dropped nine nooses infront of the shell uk headquarters on the south bank to highlight the anniversary and highlight the current struggle on the north west of ireland, where shell is set to transform a remote conservation area into an environmental disaster zone with public health and safety implications. ... read full story / add a comment

A new hard-hitting campaign to stop the use of animals in circuses is being launched in Ireland today by Animal Defenders International (ADI) and Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN). The campaign report on Ireland’s circuses is based on undercover investigations by ADI Field Officers into seven circuses touring Ireland in 2000 and 2003. The usual Sunday Evening Liturgy in the Dublin Catholic Worker House was followed by soup and an Open House Gathering where all were welcome. This week was more poignant than normal because of the realisation that our friends may be going to jail. The strike by members of the Communications Workers Union (CWU) in An Post is to go ahead from Monday after last-ditch talks facilitated through the National Implementation Body (NIB) to avert planned strike action ended without a breakthrough. Pickets will be placed on the GPO in Dublin from Midnight Sunday, meaning the GPO will be closed, and a nationwide overtime ban will also come into effect. Things are slightly complicated by the fact, that, at the moment, only the CWU will be on strike from Monday. However many members of the other 3 unions representing An Post workers, the CPSU, PSEU and AHCPS have said that they will refuse to cross any picket lines, thus raising the prospect of suspensions, and a very rapid escalation of the dispute. ... read full story / add a comment

Five Danish peace activists were this week sentenced to pay a fine of DKK 3,000 each as a penalty for protesting from the public gallery against the Danish parliament's decision of November last year to extend the duration of Danish troops' participation in the war in Iraq. We have it from Noel Dempsey that thre is no foundation to unsubstantiated rumours that SHELL and its asscociates in The Corrib Gas Field may have been generous with corporate hospitality to public servants. In answer to a Parliamentary Question from Treveor Sargent, the Minister replied : "There has never been sufficient corporate hospitality by any licensee involved in offshore exploration to warrant the necessity for a declaration under the [Ethics in Public ]Acts." ... read full story / add a comment

Deirdre Clancy gave the rest of her testimony, followed by Nuin Dunlop. The junior prosecutor bored the jury while he made insinuations about Ms. Clancy's religious beliefs, the existence of a ringleader in the group, and hidden desires to get arrested. The senior prosecutor tried to portray Ms. Dunlop as not having thought the action through very well. Both ladies explained quite well the real context and motives of their action, from what they knew of the impending shock and awe, and the concerns for the people in Iraq. After lunch Cathy Kelly of Voices in the Wilderness and former UN Asst Secretary-General Denis Halliday testified as to what they had told the defendants about the situation in Iraq when they attended a peace conference in Kildare shortly before the action. Both of them related the first hand experience of the hard realities of Iraqi life to the jury as they had done to the defendants.
