Sinn Féin is no longer anti-imperialist

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Sunday November 06, 2005 17:09author by Paul Dohertyauthor address New York Report this post to the editors

It is now on the side of global (i.e. US) imperialism

The photo of Martin McGuinness fraternising with infamous war criminal Kissinger - which is on the home page of www.ncafp.org - sums up the hypocrisy of the Sinn Féin leadership. They talk anti-imperialist in Ireland and kiss up to imperialists in Washington and across the US.

As a regular reader of Indymedia Ireland, I get the definite impression that folk back home still see Sinn Féin as part of the left. Here in New York, that view has been well and truly shattered by the company they keep when they come here and to Washington. From war mongers like Peter King to war criminals like Kissinger, they seek support from the worst elements in the US, instead of looking for support to the 'other superpower' - the millions of americans, and Irish-americans, who are against war, militarism and the Project for a New American Century.

I have tried to copy the photo onto this post, but cannot quite figure how to do it - maybe some techie can have a look at the website of the National Committee for American Foreign Policy. http://www.ncafp.org/ and do it for me.

Im not surprised $inn £ein have gone deathly quiet at this post and it certainly isnt the first time .

They wont answer this or any other thread in which they are criticised for their leaderships collaboration with imperialsism , native and foreign . They never do . They only use this site to post details of their meetings where they describe themselves as anti imperialist and then run away from genuine debate when asked to explain their actions as opposed to their vote catching rhetoric .

Ive no doubt the vast majority of their membership is genuine in their opposition to imperialism but when it comes to their leadership they let themselves down a bagful . They are simply sheepish in their devotion to lowlifes like Gerry , Martin etc who have utterly disgraced this cause by the activities pictured above .

Sheep , tiocfaidh ar baaaaaa

Its also very interesting to point out that the US site itself claims our conflict was against American interests . As Im resigned to the fact the shinners will conveniently ignore this piece Id like to hear the opinion of the left in Ireland on this , and how this squares with their notion of Irelands conflict being merely sectarian and not an anti imperialist one . If Adams and McGuinness are being honoured by these people for surrendering their arms and propping up British rule in Ireland how was the struggle merely sectarian . Surely it was anti imperialist ? Or was this just an excuse for a hooley 1000s of miles away ?

I am surprised at your surprise over this.

It is called the ability to rewrite, delete, add or otherwise amend history and facts.

By the way, on the subject of rewriting history, I wonder what their attitude is to anyone down south who wants to wear a red poppy this wek ?

author by anti imperialistpublication date Sun Nov 06, 2005 20:42author address author phone Report this post to the editors

saying Gerrys inner circle ( Hartley , Maskey etc) have been popping up at poppy day celebrations honouring britains imperial army since every year since 1994 .

But thats a good point above . If the anti colonial conflict in Ireland is against US foreign interests , as it certainly appears to be on their website , where does the anti imperialist camp in Ireland stand on this subject . Very far away , looking the other direction , whistling ?

author by Robertpublication date Mon Nov 07, 2005 18:46author address author phone Report this post to the editors

This is not the first time that the provos have gone and done something like this. Gerry near broke his neck to appear in a photo with Dubya on the eve of the war in Iraq.

Though those of you quick to point the finger (justifiably) should remember that many on the left here welcomed Bill Clinton to Ireland not once but twice if memory serves me correct.

But what do you expect from a peace process that defines Britain as having no strategic role in Ireland and US imperialism as playing a progressive role in Ireland (that one was by Gibney).

Militarists devoid of politics it would seem (though militarism and politics are a contradiction in terms).

author by Despublication date Mon Nov 14, 2005 14:31author address author phone Report this post to the editors

And to complete the picture, lets not forget Gerry's moving speech to the Dublin chamber of commerce. Truly, it can now be said that the party is approaching "respectability" at concorde speed.

MARTIN MCGUINNESS PRESS CONFERENCE
The National Committee on American Foreign Policy is hosting a luncheon at the '21' Club (21 West 52nd Street, New York, NY) on Friday, July 29, 2005, for Martin McGuinness of Sinn Fein, the political wing of the I.R.A.

The guest of honor would be Sinn Féin's Martin McGuinness, but also around the table would be longtime friends, Henry Kissinger and Paul Volcker, the former Federal Reserve chairman.

The photographs of a smiling Martin McGuinness standing behind Kissinger have seriously damaged Sinn Féin's credibility amongst the progressive left-wing movements of the world. There can be no hiding behind the 'principles and tactics' argument on this issue.

So long Bill
BY ROBBIE MacGABHANN
Clinton didn't speak long and it wasn't really what he said that mattered, though his speech covered all the bases, local and national. He talked about the 45 million US citizens of Irish extraction, the Corrs, the software island, the boom town that Dundalk was, facing into our destiny and laying our history to rest and finally the assertion that it was ``a new day in Ireland''.
As Brian Kennedy struck up Danny Boy with an accompanying violinist and a children's choir, it became clear to us why we were there. Yes there was a curiosity value in seeing and if you were lucky meeting Clinton. But the possible reason why we, all 60,000 of us, were standing out in the cold evening air was that this was an affirmation of where have come to during the past eight years of Clinton's presidency. We had come into the light and there should be no going back.
Indeed, it was clear too as we cheered and applauded that Clinton had done his part, unlike any previous US president. As he basked in the moonlight, the unacceptable aspects of the modern USA, including the boycott of Cuba, the bombing of Iraq and Kosovo and the undermining of the UN didn't really go away. It was more a case of accepting the reality that on the issue of Ireland, Clinton had done the right thing. For this he deserves our unequivocal thanks. So long Bill, it was a truly excellent adventure.

Remember, everyone - including Henry Kissinger - has their part to play in the struggle

this has refreshed my opinion of Sinn Fein, I thought we'd gone over to the looney left completely, certainly no fan of Kissinger or his policies but this is to be welcomed. Socialism is completely anthema to Irish life, glad SF now realise it. Now maybe the Draft Dodgers will go and join one of those micro left groups

Mick,

Your honesty is most welcome. Now tell me, which position on the $inn £éin ard comhairle do you hold?

Please forward your comments to An Phoblacht. It's about time people like you -the true shinners- got a look in edgeways in that Pinko rag.
And have you seen the people Mary Lou is running around with in Strasbourg.

Time to clear the augean stables of the hippies and peaceniks, the treehuggers (OK we'll keep the treehuggers).

It wasn't for this that my granda sold An Phoblacht round the pubs.

Justin - I'm afraid the Draft Dodgers are here to stay, they kept their heads well dug down in Das Kapital when the bullets are flying but no with the ceasefires etc they see an opportunity to hijack Sinn Fein and take us on a left turn, much to the disappointemnt of many northerners who took it in the throat for over 30 years while the 'Comrades' organised a few womans conferences around Dublin. So the next time you see Mary Lou or Catroinas Ruane smile at the cameras and swish the hair back remember there is some poor bugger at 45 years of age in somewhere like Tyrone or South Derry who gave the movement his all from his teenage years who has been sidlined, patted on the head for his role, given a commerorative trophy and told to stand aside for the Sinn Fein Nuevo Socialists.

The real socialists in Sinn Fein. Those from Belfast, Dublin and Derry are also being shafted by the new Liz McManus types of the party.

Mick,

Your points are well made except that I wouldn't take the "neuvo socialist" bit too seriously from the lads and ladeens if I were you. Although, Mary Lou is pally with the Nordic Green Left and Gerry shakes the hand of Mandella at every possible (photo) opportunity the 'S' word barely gets a mention these days. I didn't even find it in the Orga $hinn £ein webpage, despite their Che Guevara chic.

No, what we're into these days is 'the equality agenda', which is vague enough to satisfy PROgressives and to placate the Dublin Chamber of Commerce all at once.(Mandella, did something similar in South Africa).

However, although we are probably light-years apart ideologically speaking, it is truly refreshing to read of someone who wants the Provisionals to actually come clean on where they stand on the old right-left issue.
Get in there! Storm Kevin Street and Connolly House (mind how you go) and get the pseudo-lefties out!!

author by Mickpublication date Wed Dec 14, 2005 16:59author address author phone Report this post to the editors

City Boy - thats very true and the reason the Belfast/Dublin/Derry socialists are being sidelined is because the conclusion is that socialism is more that a little daft given our time/space location and these guys would have us in a North Korea wasteland if they got the chance, not intentionally of course, its just the rock is built on sand. Socialism is a no goer. So they've introduced the 'Socialism Lite' gang to take the rough edge of it, thus you'll see more 'pinko liberal' output than 'hard red'. Just take a look at the ghist of this thread - McGuinness meeting Kissinger.
