The Milvian bridge over the Tiber in Rome was first built in 206 BC out of wood and only lasted a hundred years being replaced by one made of stone in 115BC the bulk of which survives to this day though there have been renovations most notably in 1429 (common era) Francesco da Genazzano was responsible for saving it from near collapse. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the bridge was modified by two artists, Valadier and Pigiani who added the lamps. It was on this bridge that one of the pivotal moments of Western History and God's usual meddling in the affairs of men is thought to have happened. Though lest I upset anyone may I stress now that God only meddles on the side of rich and powerful men such as emperors. But the point of this article is not to report on God (who is silent these days) but to report on something small yet not trivial which illustrates the nature of the Italian ruling class. ... read full story / add a comment

Some of you might have noticed your stock in BP, Exxon-Mobil, Chevron-Teaxaco, Conoco-Philips go down today. I know I didn't - but I did have to field any faxes from the French "Total" and Norwegian "Statoil". No bother - I just take the paper out of the machine. Hugo Chavez has decreed a nationalisation of the Orinoco River strip which will come into effect on the 1st of May 2007. He explained this to his beloved people during the last episode of his regular TV show "Hola Presidente!". ... read full story / add a comment

As anyone that has followed the fortunes of the Shell to Sea campaign will know, under the often 'unflattering' luminance of the media spotlight, there appears an almost unhealthy association between some of those that 'strive' for impartiality and objectivity, whether it be in the media or in politics, and the corporation. ... read full story / add a comment

History records instances of powerful, belligerent nations invading and annexing weaker nations in their bid for world domination and plunder. Various pretexts are utilised to justify these attacks/invasions, the most familiar and infamous are the USS Liberty attack, the Tonkin Gulf incident and more recently the imaginary WMD 'threat'. These examples have one thing in common; they are all orchestrated in order to harness the public as a manageable resource to be used and abused by prevailing powers and to justify an otherwise illegal invasion or military aggression. Nations bent on world domination are extremely predictable; world domination is the folly of a powerful military and inept leadership – history is familiar with a multitude of conquering clowns known to us today as mass murderers. ... read full story / add a comment

international / politics / elections Sunday February 25, 2007 - 19:07 by John Meehan
A small number of Dáil candidates positioning themselves on the left rule out coalition with Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael, or doing side-deals. This number includes Séamus Healy (Tipperary South), a supporter of the Campaign for and Independent Left (CIL) and Joe Higgins (Dublin West) of the Socialist Party. I hope both these candidates are returned to the next Dáil, and that they are joined by like-minded deputies who will not sacrifice the left on the altar of social-liberal policies and its druids : Ahern, Kenny, Rabbitte and their colleagues. The issue may arise concretely after the May 2007 general election. Most opinion polls indicate that support for the two main conservative parties continues to fall significantly, a trend well-established since 1987. Similar problems confront the Left, worldwide. One of the tactics that Shell have deployed in their scheme to install a huge refinery at Bellanaboy is to try and make people believe that the controversy is somehow only of interest to Mayo, that is is somehow an issue only for "locals". So it's good to see BBC Ulster covering the story. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/northern_ireland/639...9.stm It's also interesting to see a guide for those (unlike indymedia readers) who may not have heard anything much about the campaign to get Shell to Sea. ... read full story / add a comment

The story below explains why a member of the italian Senate. Franco Turigliatto, refused to vote for the Romano Prodi Government. The leadership of Rifondazione, the Refounded Communist Party, is threatening to expel Franco from the PRC. You can email solidarity greetings to Franco Turigliatto - details are at the link http://internationalviewpoint.org/spip.php?page=print_a...=1220 The rightwing behaviour of the Rifondazione leadership is a warning to Irish elected representatives positioned on the left who leave the door open to coalition with rightwing parties and implementation of a neoliberal agenda. ... read full story / add a comment
