The Irish News 2 February 2012 Exclusive - Full scale of abuse against Catholic worker revealed Seanin Graham, Health Correspondent, The full scale of the sectarian abuse against a Catholic social worker can be revealed today. Co Down woman Laurena Kane (43) was awarded a £60,000 payout from the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust at the High Court last week but The Irish News has now seen the result of an internal investigation which sets out the case in full. While the trust did not admit liability until last month, the internal 2009 investigation concludes the "sustained" sectarian comments represented a "serious case of alleged harassment" which the trust failed to address. The leaked document reveals the contents of interviews with the "chief protagonist" of the abuse - named in court as Barbara Lowry - and six other staff members. ... read full story / add a comment

The 2ND Belfast Anarchist Bookfair recently took place building on the success of the previous year. Stalls were provided by the WSM, Choice Ireland, Just Books, Organise! and Revolutionary Anarcha-feminist group(RAG) as well as groups from as far as England and Scotland including Solidarity Federation giving the bookfair an international flavour. The Bookfair provides a healthy platform for constructive debate and discussion from past to present struggles. To exchange experiences, to reflect and agitate are all essential ingredients for a stronger, more vibrant class struggle anarchist movement in the future. While the rest of us are slaving away to make end’s meat and facing the brunt of the ‘credit crunch’ We are continually told by our political rulers to be ‘competitive’ for the bosses waiting for the promised ‘trickle-down effect’ that never arrives. Staggering rises in energy prices above the rate of inflation, imposition of un-wanted water charges while hundreds of people die every year due to ‘fuel poverty’ it seems the North elite rich club have never had it so good according to the latest Sunday Times rich list. There is now a record of 61 people from the north among Ireland’s richest 250 and they are getting richer! Last year their wealth increased to a combined £10.7 billion! On top of the list like every year is Fermanagh’s Sean Quinn worth about £3.7 billion, who does allot of dealing in insurance and property market. Alright for some eh? ... read full story / add a comment

Standing on a damp road in the predawn morning surrounded by dozens of hostile police officers, it was easy to picture yourself in Ardoyne, Portadown or the Lower Ormeau. As the anticipation built in preparation for the arrival of the unwanted visitors, determined to trundle through the community, it almost felt like the marching season as well. But this wasn’t Dunloy or Bellaghy. Rossport is a small Gaeltacht community in probably the most remote part of Co Mayo. Take away the legions of Guards and protestors and it would be hard to imagine confrontation ever taking place on a road enveloped by bleak bogland and foreboding forest. ... read full story / add a comment |
