the BBC are on strike from midnight 22/5/05 to midnight 23/5/05. Help them out. Don't watch BBC TV. (it may surprise you, but two of the BBC terestial channels are broadcast by powerful antennae into the Irish homeland). If you were sold a telly set with these stations on the preset selection, it is your duty as a socialist to ignore them today. ... read full story / add a comment

Below is a link to a site explaining just what Trolls are. I've noticed Trolls winding people up on this site, especially when it comes to mocking those killed in war or humiliated in some way. Obviously this causes a lot of anger and distracts from what are otherwise interesting and informative discussions. http://members.aol.com/intwg/trolls.htm Hopefully the advice on this site will help people cut through the crap that Trolls ply them with. Banksy, one of those names which has been recognised for years amongst the European underground artivism scene, not least because he thought to leave his name stencilled near his better work which left on the walls of Bristol, London, Barcelona and many other cities, helped us work out the name he likes for himself, and indeed be additionally inspired to explore the artistic and political potential of the stencil. ... read full story / add a comment

Condoleeza Rice (USA Secretary for State) spoke in Ireland (was it at Shannon?) about the alleged massacres being perpetrated by the US-backed regime in Uzbekistan. The USA has a large base in the country to facilitate its operations in Afghanistan and to operate as one of the bases used by the CIA in its "extraordinary renditions" program where people are flown to foreign countries so they can be tortured off US soil. The US State Department website admits that Uzbek security forces use torture and at the same time the USA has granted them approximately US$100 million in 2002 alone for "security". The White House has also released press statements insinuating that because the opposition is Islamic it must be terrorist. ... read full story / add a comment

Urbana Champaign are probably one of the best organised Indymedia collectives in the global network. They recently raised enough money to buy their own premises - a 30,000 square foot post office. One of their volunteers Sascha Meinrath is also the co-ordinator of the Champaign-Urbana Community Wireless Network. In this interview with Amy Goodman, Sascha explains what the project is about, how viable it is and the problems they've encountered with large telcos who are lobbying US government - and succeeding - to have a legislative monopoly on the provision of information networks. ... read full story / add a comment
