Urging the G8 leaders to do more to help Africa, is like begging the same people for mercy who represent the inhuman systems. And nothing was said aloud about the origins of poverty, stopping the illegal wars or the taking of the African oil: again cheating Africa out of trillions. ... read full story / add a comment

Melita Norwood has died at the age of 84 in her bexleyheath home. Born in 1937 she became an agent for the Soviet Union at the age of 25. She was exposed cruelly in 1999 and said that "she had only wanted Russia to be on an equal footing" and that as agent "Hola!" had sold secrets on nuclear weapon development to the Soviet Union. In fact she gave them, without personal profit. ... read full story / add a comment

"this is a very modest step forward which is being spun as a colossal leap" P. Watt of Action Aid "President Bush's pledge today will mean an extra nine hundred million dollars each year for Africa and this is a welcome first step. Hoewver it is widely calculated that $25 billion is needed annually for Africa so we hope the announcement today is just the beginning of a much bigger US commitment to fighting poverty." - Oxfam the USA will double its aid to Africa in the next five years to those states which are "reforming" on the basis of trade and support the "war on malaria". [email protected] Today (Wed) in the High Court five men from Mayo face possible jail sentences because they are in contempt of court. They broke the law to seek justice. The order of committal is being sought by Shell over the Corrib gas project. The five men are Rossport landowners and part-time farmers, Willie Corduff, Phillip McGrath and Brendan Philbin; Rossport resident and musician Vincent Mc Grath and Ceathrú Thaidhg resident and retired teacher, Mícheál Ó Seighin. The five are accused of contempt because they ignored a High Court injunction prohibiting them from interfering with Shell seeking access to lands in Rossport. Shell is also seeking a High Court injunction today preventing people from denying vehicular access to a Shell compound in Rossport. Around mid-day on Tuesday of last week (June 21) a stand-off began (and is continuing) between local drivers and a compound-bound lorry on the ... read full story / add a comment
